NHL Game Summary - Colorado at San Jose|
(Friday, November 30th)
Final Score: San Jose 3, Colorado 2
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Joe Thornton had two goals and an assist as
the San Jose Sharks held off the Colorado Avalanche, 3-2, at HP Pavilion.
Mike Grier got the other goal while Evgeni Nabokov made 18 saves in the win
for the Sharks, who stopped a three-game losing streak.
"We haven't been very good at home," said Thornton. "We have a three-game road
trip coming up and we wanted to leave here on a good note. We got going early
tonight and played a physical game."
Milan Hejduk and Andrew Brunette each scored a goal while Peter Budaj made 26
saves for the Avalanche, who have dropped five of their last seven games.
San Jose scored just 1:52 into the game with a power-play tally. Milan
Michalek found Thornton all alone at the right side of the net and Thornton
easily wristed the puck into the open net.
Friday marked the second anniversary of the trade that brought Joe Thornton to
San Jose from Boston.
"He made good plays today, he's playing great right now and we knew that
coming into the game," Budaj said of Thornton. "He made us pay, especially the
first goal, the second goal and he passed for the third one so he was in all
three goals. He's their playmaker."
In the second, the Sharks took a 2-0 lead on the power play as Thornton had
the puck at the low right side, took a stride closer to the net and slipped
the disc between the pads of Budaj at the 4:42 mark.
Colorado got on the board with a short-handed goal. On a 2-on-1 break, Paul
Stastny skated the puck the length of the ice and from the left circle slid a
pass across the goalmouth to Hejduk, who redirected the puck past Nabokov with
3:35 left in the second.
The Sharks, though, scored just 1:37 later as Thornton sent a pass from the
outside of the left circle across to Grier, who tapped the puck into the net
for a 3-1 lead.
The Avs, however, again made it a one-goal game as Brunette had the puck at
the low left side and attempted to center the puck, but it went off Nabokov
and into the net with just 29 seconds left in the second.
San Jose did a good job of keeping Colorado from establishing any consistent
pressure in the final period as the Avalanche managed six shots on net in the
final frame, all of which Nabokov easily turned aside.
The Sharks hit the road for three games starting on Monday in Colorado...The
Avalanche play in Los Angeles on Saturday...It was the 26th multi-goal game
for Thornton...San Jose went 2-for-5 on the power play while Colorado scored
on one of its five power plays.
