NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Anaheim

(Friday, November 23rd)

Final Score: Phoenix 4, Anaheim 3 (SO)

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Radim Vrbata scored twice in regulation -- one with just over a minute to play -- and added the clinching shootout tally to lead the Phoenix Coyotes past the Anaheim Ducks, 4-3, at the Honda Center.

Ilya Bryzgalov, recently released by the Ducks, turned away both shots he faced in the shootout and ended with 23 saves for Phoenix, which put together its first three-game winning streak of the season.

Phoenix landed Bryzgalov on waivers last week after he was let go by the Ducks. This was his third win for the Coyotes in as many starts.

Chris Pronger had two goals while new backup Jonas Hiller turned away 35 shots for Anaheim, which has dropped two in a row since a four-game win streak.

"It's more disappointing than anything," Pronger said. "We've shown at times that we can play 60-minute games and play at a high level, but for some reason opt not to. I think it's more disappointing than frustrating."

Vrbata scored with 1:07 remaining in regulation to force an extra session. The Coyotes pulled their goaltender to add an extra skater, and were able to apply pressure in the Anaheim zone. The puck caromed toward the left side of the net following a blocked shot, where Vrbata was waiting to punch it home to knot it at 3-3.

"We were kind of lucky that they scored early in the period, so we had (about) 20 minutes to get it back," Vrbata said. "You have to play 60 minutes, and that's what we did."

After a fruitless overtime, Shane Doan capitalized on Phoenix's first shootout attempt by putting a forehand try through the five-hole. Bryzgalov stopped both Ryan Getzlaf and Corey Perry before Vrbata finished the game with a backhander.

The outcome appeared to be heading in a different direction for a while, as Pronger's back-to-back goals erased the Ducks' one-goal deficit and put them in front.

With his team trailing 2-1, the standout defenseman ripped a shot from the point that navigated through traffic in front before finding the back of the net with just 20 ticks left in the middle stanza.

Anaheim assumed a 3-2 edge 2:53 into the third on a one-timer by Pronger that beat a screened Bryzgalov.

The Coyotes opened up the scoring midway through the first period. Keith Ballard started the sequence with a soft backhander from the high slot, which Peter Mueller stopped before it got on net. He then switched to the forehand and stuffed it past Hiller at the 9:46 mark.

Just over three minutes later, however, a Phoenix defenseman lost control of the puck deep in his own zone, and it slipped past Bryzgalov. Getzlaf was the last Duck to touch the puck and was credited with the goal.

Phoenix reclaimed the lead 10:03 into the second, as Vrbata let a wrister fly from the left circle that found room in the far side of the net.
