NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Anaheim|
(Thursday, October 25th)
Final Score: Phoenix 1, Anaheim 0
Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Craig Weller scored in the second period and
Alexander Auld made that goal stand up, as the Phoenix Coyotes edged the
Anaheim Ducks, 1-0, at the Honda Center.
Auld dazzled for the full 60 minutes, stopping all 31 shots he faced for
Phoenix, which had dropped three straight coming in.
The Coyotes' victory impacted a couple larger streaks as well. Anaheim had won
10 straight at home against Phoenix, and claimed 11 of the last 13 meetings
Ilja Bryzgalov was nearly as good, allowing one goal on 21 tries for the
Ducks, who have lost three in a row and seven of their last 10 games.
"The biggest thing for us is not to panic, not point fingers," Ducks captain
Chris Pronger said. "We're all making mistakes out there and we're learning
from this bad stretch what it takes to win."
After a scoreless stalemate in the first, Weller lit the lamp 3:03 into the
middle stanza to put the Coyotes out in front.
Weller took a feed from Niko Kapanen on a rush, moved into the right circle
and released a wrister that found room short side.
The goaltenders took over from there, both withstanding steady pressure and
quality chances to keep the score at 1-0.
Anaheim was the aggressor for much of the third -- outshooting Phoenix 11-7 in
the frame -- but could not crack Auld. The netminder also got some help from
the post midway through the period, keeping the Ducks off the board.
The suspense lasted until the final moments, with Anaheim mounting one last
charge before time expired.
A scrum in front proved fruitless, however, giving Auld his third career
"I expected the Ducks to come out in the third and throw everything at us, but
we showed a lot of poise," Auld said.
Anaheim was without center Ryan Getzlaf (upper body) and forward Rob
Niedermayer (groin)...This was the opener of a three-game homestand for the
Ducks...The Ducks were 0-for-6 on the power play.
