Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Islanders captain Bill Guerin scored with 3.7
seconds left in overtime to lift New York to a thrilling 4-3 win over the New
With time running out in the extra session, Devils defenseman Andy Greene was
whistled for tripping and the Islanders quickly went to work. New Jersey
netminder Kevin Weekes made the initial save on Mike Comrie's shot, but Guerin
was there to finish off the rebound as time expired.
"You have to be opportunistic, but opportunities are created by making the
right plays, moving the puck at the right time, taking shots at the right
time," said Guerin. "There are not a ton of pretty plays in the league
It was the fourth goal in the last two games for Guerin, who recorded a hat-
trick in Thursday's 5-2 win over Washington.
Comrie and Miroslav Satan each had a goal and an assist while Radek Martinek
contributed two helpers for the Islanders, who put the brakes on a two-game
skid. New York goaltender Rick DiPietro finished with 25 saves.
Jay Pandolfo and Brian Gionta each scored for the Devils in the third period
to send the game into overtime. Weekes, getting the rare start in place of the
struggling Martin Brodeur, ended with 32 saves.
"It's another game where we didn't play 60 minutes," said Devils head coach
Brent Sutter. "We played 40 or 45 minutes and controlled the game in that
span, but 20 minutes you get sloppy and lazy and don't compete and don't work
and you allow teams to score two or three goals, you dig yourselves a hole."
New Jersey struck first as Zach Parise scored just 55 seconds into the game
before the Islanders countered with three second-period goals.
New York tied the game 3:31 into the second period as Satan, from the slot,
fed the puck down low for Vasicek, who slipped the puck past Weekes.
Satan put the Islanders up 2-1 at the 5:35 mark off a pretty no-look pass from
Sean Bergenheim. Satan skated around a Devils defender and then went from
backhand to forehand to beat Weekes.
Comrie's power-play goal with 7:57 left before the second intermission made it
3-1 New York before New Jersey responded in the third period.
Just over two minutes into the third, Pandolfo got the Devils going when
he beat DiPietro topshelf.
Then, with 7:49 left in the game, Gionta atoned for a double minor penalty
earlier in the period when he redirected Paul Martin's shot from the point
Karel Rachunek had a chance to win it for New Jersey in the overtime period,
but his shot rang off the crossbar. The Devils lost their second straight
after winning two in a row.
"They came out hard in the third period, capitalized on a couple of weird
bounces and had that power play going into overtime," said DiPietro. "I think
our PK did a great job again tonight of bailing us out and then (Guerin) comes
through in a big way in the last seconds."
DiPietro had been 0-4-1 in his previous five starts against the Devils...New
Jersey concludes its season-opening nine-game road trip Thursday against the
New York Rangers at Madison Square Garden. The Devils, who are 3-5-0 this
season, will then open their brand-new stadium, the Prudential Center, on
October 27 against Ottawa.
