NHL Game Summary - Ottawa at Phoenix

(Saturday, March 8th)

Final Score: Ottawa 4, Phoenix 2

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Mike Fisher scored twice, as the Ottawa Senators pulled away to beat the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-2, and keep pace in the Northeast Division race.

Dany Heatley tallied, and Antoine Vermette added a goal and an assist for Ottawa, which snapped a three-game losing streak. In addition, the Senators stayed two points behind first-place Montreal, which beat Los Angeles on Saturday.

Martin Gerber allowed two goals in the second period, but turned aside the 33 others he faced for the win.

Craig Weller and Peter Mueller scored for Phoenix, which has lost two in a row, both by a 4-2 score. Ilya Bryzgalov allowed the four goals on 32 shots in the loss.

Phoenix remains five points out of the final playoff spot in the Western Conference.

Late in the second period, Ottawa was down a goal after Phoenix scored two quick ones earlier in the frame. But Fisher, who also scored Ottawa's first, tied the game with two minutes left.

With the Senators on a power play, Fisher took a shot from the left circle that somehow got by Bryzgalov, knotting the score at 2-2.

Then, just 1:33 into the final period, Heatley scored a power-play marker, and Vermette scored on a rebound midway through. Gerber stopped 13 shots in the period to secure the Ottawa win.

The Senators got on the board first with a shorthanded goal by Fisher. Ottawa winger Nick Foligno sat in the penalty box for high-sticking, but the Senators managed to work the puck into their offensive zone.

Dean McAmmond sent a pass from the outer edge of the left circle to the top of the crease, and Fisher tapped it in at the 10:49 mark.

Ottawa held the lead until near the mid-point of the second frame, when the Coyotes rattled off two quick goals. At 8:45, Weller's shot from the right circle ramped off a defenseman's leg and over Gerber.

Just 1:31 later, Mueller got the puck on a breakaway after an Ottawa turnover, raced up-ice, and ripped a shot that beat Gerber top-shelf for a 2-1 Phoenix lead.
