San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Patrick Marleau notched a goal and two assists
to help the San Jose Sharks to a 3-1 victory over the Colorado Avalanche at HP
Jonathan Cheechoo and Joe Thornton each notched a goal and an assist and
Evgeni Nabokov stopped 26 shots for the Sharks, who have won three straight
and six of their last seven games.
"We've been getting pretty good starts, we just haven't been capitalizing on
our chances," said Cheechoo. "We scored a couple of rebound goals. I think
that was key for us."
Joe Sakic scored the lone goal and Peter Budaj stopped 39 shots in the loss
for the Avalanche, who have dropped three of their last four games.
"We knew coming into this game it's going to be a hard game, especially the
special teams and they were better today on their power play," said Budaj.
The Sharks struck twice on the power play in the first period to assume a 2-0
During a scrum in front of the Colorado net, Cheechoo picked up a loose puck
in the slot and snapped it over the left shoulder of Budaj at the 7:03 mark.
Just 2:29 later, Christian Ehrhoff unleashed a shot from the top of the right
circle that Budaj saved, but Marleau was on the doorstep to bang in the
rebound for his 21st goal of the season.
Nabokov stopped 10 shots in the opening frame.
Neither team lit the lamp in the second period as Colorado had eight shots and
San Jose seven in the frame.
Colorado got on the board in the third period when, while on the power play,
Paul Stastny won a left circle faceoff and drew the puck back to Sakic, who
ripped a wrist shot over the glove of Nabokov to make it a 2-1 game at the
San Jose, though, got the goal back less than two minutes later after Thornton
snapped a shot into the left corner of the net from the low right side to make
it a 3-1 contest.
The Avs host the Coyotes on Wednesday...San Jose remains at home and faces
Phoenix on Thursday...The Sharks have won five of their last six games against
the Avalanche...San Jose has scored 19 power play goals in the last seven
games...Colorado went 1-for-2 on the power play while San Jose went 3-for-5.
