Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Jozef Stumpel had a goal and two assists to
help the Florida Panthers to a 4-2 victory over the New Jersey Devils at the
Rositslav Olesz scored two goals and Joel Kwiatkowski also lit the lamp for
the Panthers, who have won their last two contests.
Ed Belfour stopped 30 shots for Florida, which has won for only the second
time in the past 10 games against New Jersey.
Brian Gionta and John Oduya each scored a goal for the Devils, who had won
five of six coming into the contest. Martin Brodeur made 28 saves in the loss.
The Devils got on the scoreboard first when Gionta scored his 23rd goal of the
season just 4:34 into the contest to make it a 1-0 game.
Florida, though, tied the game a bit less than five minutes later when Ruslan
Salei's wrist shot from the slot was tipped into the net by Olesz for a power-
New Jersey took the lead back when a left point shot by Oduya hit off the
stick of a Florida defender and went past a surprised Belfour for a 2-1
advantage just 2:25 into the second.
The Panthers, however, scored the next two goals of the frame to take a 3-2
lead into the final 20 minutes.
Florida tied the game when Stumpel picked up a loose puck in the slot and
backhanded a pass to Olesz, who snapped a wrister into the left corner of the
net at the 3:51 mark of the second.
Kwiatkowski scored the go-ahead goal with 2:38 left in the second to give
Florida a 3-2 lead.
New Jersey tried throughout the final period and pulled Brodeur with a little
over a minute to play.
The Devils appeared to tie the game when a backhand shot by Gionta from the
low left side lit the lamp, but the referee ruled that the shot bounced off
the left post and stayed out of the net.
Stumpel sealed the win with an empty-net goal with under a minute to play.
The Devils travel to Atlanta for a contest on Tuesday...The Panthers next play
on Tuesday in Pittsburgh...Florida scored on its only power play opportunity
of the game while New Jersey was held off the board on its two
chances...Gionta has a three-game goal scoring streak.
