Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Randy Robitaille scored the game-winning goal
with just 3:09 left in the contest to help the New York Islanders to a 5-3
victory over the Buffalo Sabres at Nassau Coliseum.
Arron Asham scored two goals while Trent Hunter added the other score for the
Islanders, who had lost four of five coming into the game.
"It was a really big win," said Hunter. "The fans were excited and there was a
lot of energy in the building."
Rick DiPietro stopped 27 shots in the win for New York, which snapped a six-
game losing streak against Buffalo.
Jochen Hecht scored two goals while Ryan Miller made 26 saves for the Sabres,
who have dropped their last three games.
"Early in the year, when we had some tough nights in goal, we scored enough
goals," said Buffalo coach Lindy Ruff. "But it's a team game and on nights
like that, you have to be able to come back, you have to be able to get one
late and help him out. We had a couple of opportunities and didn't."
New York was trailing 3-2 in the third period when Asham tied the game with
his second goal of the contest on a slap shot from the high slot that beat
Miller 6:53 into the final frame.
Robitaille then gave his team a 4-3 lead at the 16:51 mark when his wrist shot
from the left point went into the right corner of the net past a screened
The Islanders sealed the win with just 54 seconds left in the contest when
Hunter circled behind the Buffalo net and passed to Andy Hilbert, who tapped
the puck in from the low left side.
The Islanders drew first blood in the contest when Hunter skated down the
right wing, avoided a check, and from the slot snapped a backhander into the
left corner of the net just 7:42 in.
Buffalo, though, tied the game with 4:59 left in the first when Hecht banged
in the loose puck from the left side of the net to make it a 1-1 game.
Asham gave New York a 2-1 lead just 3:03 into the second period with his
eighth goal of the season.
The Sabres, however, responded by scoring the next two goals and took a 3-2
lead into the final period.
Hecht scored his second goal of the contest when he snapped in a rebound from
the low slot for a power-play tally at the five-minute mark.
Later in the frame, Daniel Paille brought the puck into the Islander zone on a
rush and from the left circle flicked a pass to the slot where Ales Kotalik
tipped it into the right corner of the net with 7:35 left in the second.
The Islanders host Detroit on Tuesday...Buffalo returns home to face Boston on
Tuesday...Hecht has 14 goals this season, which is just five off his career-
high for a season...Buffalo went 1-for-4 on the power play while the Isles
were held scoreless in their five chances.
