Chicago, IL (Sports Network) - Marian Gaborik scored a pair of goals as the
suddenly road-happy Minnesota Wild downed the Chicago Blackhawks, 3-0, at the
Stephane Veilleux also lit the lamp while Manny Fernandez stopped all 24 shots
he faced for the Wild, who have won four of their last five. With the win,
Minnesota set a team record with four straight road victories. It had lost 11
in a row as the visitor prior to this surge.
"This game was big for us because it seems that everyone in our division keeps
winning," said Minnesota forward Brian Rolston.
Brian Boucher allowed three goals on 26 shots for Chicago, which has lost
eight straight games.
Gaborik opened up the scoring with 24.5 seconds left in the first, as he
pounced on a turnover for a breakaway chance, then beat Boucher through the
five hole with a quick wrist shot.
"Gaborik is one of those guys you just don't want to give breakaways to," said
Minnesota made it a 2-0 contest midway through the second on a marker by
Veilleux. Mikko Koivu set up the play by gaining control of the puck down low,
then moving out front as the defense and netminder gravitated towards him. He
then dished the puck to the left side of the net, where Veilleux was there to
slip it into the cage.
Wes Walz and Gaborik then teamed up for a spectacular goal 2:39 into the third
to make it a three-goal advantage. Walz did most of the work, storming into
the zone and weaving through defenders before executing a blind drop pass
into the slot. Gaborik in rhythm flicked a wrister high over the left shoulder
of Boucher for his 11th goal of the season.
These two teams also met last Sunday, with the Wild rallying from a two-goal
deficit to win 4-3 in a shootout...Chicago has dropped its last seven at
home...The eight-game losing streak for Chicago matches a season
high...Minnesota has now beaten Chicago seven straight times.
