Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Alexander Semin and Chris Clark each scored
two goals to lead Washington over Carolina, 5-2, at the RBC Center.
Alexander Ovechkin extended his point streak to eight games with a tally for
the Capitals, who snapped a three-game losing skid.
Olaf Kolzig turned aside 34 shots en route to his 16th victory of the season.
Erik Cole and Eric Staal rounded out the scoring for the Hurricanes, who have
lost two of their last three games. John Grahame made 25 saves in defeat.
Clark put Washington on top 1-0 at the 13:00 mark in the first period with an
unassisted slap shot tally.
The Capitals increased their lead to two on Semin's wrist shot power-play goal
11:28 into the second. Dainius Zubrus notched the only assist on the goal.
Carolina cut its deficit to 2-1 when Cole backhanded the disc past an off-
balance Kolzig 2:00 into the third. From the right circle, Mike Commodore's
shot deflected off Kolzig's glove before Cole grabbed the loose puck and
easily tapped it in.
Semin notched his second goal of a the contest -- a 15-foot wrister -- at the
9:33 mark to give Washington a two-goal edge, but 2 1/2 minutes later, Staal
made it a 3-2 game by scoring with a slap shot from 51-feet out.
Clark's empty netter with one minute to play and Ovechkin's 68-foot snap shot
20 seconds later accounted for the final margin.
Semin has 10 goals in the last seven games...Washington finished 1-for-3 on
the power play while Carolina failed to convert on three chances...The
Hurricanes won 57 percent of the face-offs.
