NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Toronto

(Tuesday, February 27th)

Final Score: Buffalo 6, Toronto 1

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Jochen Hecht scored a pair of goals with an assist as Buffalo pummeled Toronto, 6-1, at the Air Canada Centre.

Clarke MacArthur had a goal and two assists, while Derek Roy also tallied and notched an assist for the Sabres, who have won nine of their last 12 games. Jason Pominville and Drew Stafford rounded out the scoring for Buffalo.

Netminder Ryan Miller stopped 27 of the 28 shots he faced and earned his 30th win of the season.

Prior to the trade deadline earlier in the day, the Sabres traded goaltender Martin Biron to Philadelphia for a second-round pick in the 2007 NHL Draft, but picked up netminder Ty Conklin from Columbus in exchange for a fifth-round choice.

Also, Buffalo acquired left wing Dainius Zubrus from Washington and defenseman Mikko Lehtonen from Nashville.

Alexei Ponikarovsky scored the lone goal for the Maple Leafs, who have dropped four of five. Andrew Raycroft made just seven saves on 11 shots through two periods and was pulled in favor of Jean-Sebastien Aubin, who turned aside 15 shots in the third period.

Buffalo took a 1-0 lead at the 14:02 mark in the first period on Pominville's short wrister. MacArthur assisted the goal with a backhand shot from the left circle, which Pominville picked up and rebounded home.

The scoring heated up in the second, with the Sabres tallying three times to go up 4-1.

First, after assists from Hecht and Henrik Tallinder, Stafford netted the puck with a wrap-around goal 4:55 into the period. Just over seven minutes later, Roy picked up the loose disc in front of the net and used a 14-foot slap shot to give Buffalo a three-goal margin.

Toronto finally lit the lamp when Ponikarovsky took a centering pass from Johnny Pohl and lifted the puck past Miller's stick side with 4:12 remaining in the second.

The Sabres, though, responded and regained their three-goal edge on Hecht's tip-in with 1:32 left in the frame. From the point, Toni Lydman fired a shot that deflected off Hecht's stick and over an off-balanced Raycroft.

Hecht's second tally of the game -- a 25-foot wrister on the power play -- padded Buffalo's advantage to 5-1 at the 5:21 mark in the third. Nathan Paetsch recorded an assist.

MacArthur added the final goal with an easy backhander in a wide-open net with 6:11 to play.
