NHL Game Summary - Washington at Florida

(Friday, March 30th)

Final Score: Florida 3, Washington 2 (OT)

Sunrise, FL (Sports Network) - Martin Gelinas scored a pair of goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Florida Panthers beat the Washington Capitals, 3-2, at BankAtlantic Center.

Gregory Campbell also scored and Ed Belfour made 30 saves for the Panthers, who have won three straight games and moved within four points of the final playoff spot in the Eastern Conference.

Jakub Klepis and Chris Clark scored for the Capitals, who have dropped four in a row but still picked up their first point since a 7-1 win against Tampa Bay on March 18.

With just 2:01 elapsed in overtime, Stephen Weiss took a slap shot from the right faceoff circle towards the front of the net. Gelinas was camped out in front and the puck hit his stick and went into the net past Brett Johnson.

Gelinas wasn't exactly sure the puck went in, as it quickly bounced out after hitting the back crossbar. But replays showed the puck clearly went into the net.

Johnson ended with 32 saves for the Capitals, who have also dropped eight in a row on the road (0-6-2).

The Caps started the scoring 6:43 into the game when Klepis scored from the bottom of the left circle. Klepis took a pass from Jiri Novotny, who was skating to the crease and drew Belfour out of position.

Campbell evened the score 7:18 later when his wrister from along the left-side boards handcuffed Johnson and found the back of the net.

Clark put Washington back in front 2:18 into the second when an Alexander Semin pass intended for Alexander Ovechkin hit his skate and went into the net, but Gelinas tied the game 7:46 later when he redirected an Ollie Jokinen slapper past Johnson.

Both goals came on the power play and Florida's was just minutes after Washington had a possible goal overturned after video replay showed that Belfour dove back and knocked the puck off the goal line just before it crossed into the net.

Game Notes

Jokinen has a seven-game point scoring streak, scoring six goals and dishing out nine assists over that span...Clark extended his point-scoring streak to six games (three goals, four assists)...Florida ended March 9-4-1 for 19 points, the club's best month of the season...The Panthers have won five straight against Washington...This was Gelinas' third multi-goal game of the season, with all three coming against Washington.
