NHL Game Summary - Colorado at Phoenix

(Thursday, March 29th)

Final Score: Colorado 4, Phoenix 3

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Milan Hejduk notched a goal and an assist, and the Colorado Avalanche survived a late flurry to outlast the Phoenix Coyotes, 4-3.

Paul Stastny and Tyler Arnason tallied two assists each for the Avalanche, who have won two of three, but still find themselves on the outside looking in on the Western Conference playoff picture. Calgary won its fifth straight game Thursday, 4-2 in Minnesota, to maintain a seven-point lead over the Avalanche for the eighth and final playoff spot in the West.

Peter Budaj stopped 20 shots for Colorado, which has five games to make up those seven points, with two of them against the Flames.

Steven Reinprecht had a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who have lost three straight and 12 of 14. Daniel Carcillo had two assists for Phoenix, which scored three third-period goals, but fell short in the end. Curtis Joseph was pulled after letting in four goals on 14 shots, and Mikael Tellqvist stopped four shots in relief.

Hejduk got the Avalanche on the board 6:55 in, flipping a rebound of an Arnason shot just under the crossbar to make it 1-0.

Hejduk set up the next Colorado score, skating down the right side of the Phoenix zone and flipping it towards the net, where Brett McLean was able to tap the puck in, putting the Avalanche up 2-0 at the 12:45 mark.

Wojtek Wolski scored on the power play to put Colorado up 3-0 at the 5:36 mark of the second period. Brad Richardson scored less than two minutes later, and the Avalanche led 4-0.

After Reinprecht and Kevyn Adams scored at 4:15 and 6:08 of the third period, Nick Boynton got a lucky bounce to pull the Coyotes to within one. Boynton flipped a shot towards the net that deflected off the ankle of an Avalanche player and past Budaj, and the Coyotes were within 4-3 with 1:21 remaining.

Phoenix pulled Tellqvist in favor of an extra attacker, and it nearly produced a game-tying score when Carcillo skated in all alone on the right side of the net in the final seconds. Carcillo fired a backhanded shot off the right post, though, and the Avalanche survived.

Game Notes

Joseph has lost eight of his last nine starts...Joe Sakic's assist in the second period moved him past Ray Bourque and into ninth on the NHL's all-time scoring list with 1,580 points.
