Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Chad Kilger scored twice and Andrew Raycroft
made 26 saves to keep Toronto's playoff hopes alive in a 6-1 stomping of the
Carolina Hurricanes at Air Canada Centre.
Yanic Perreault notched a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have won
three of their last four games.
Toronto and Carolina each have 84 points and sit in a three-way tie along with
the Islanders for the ninth place in the Eastern Conference.
"The fans have been louder and louder each game and we've been feeding off
that," said Toronto coach Paul Maurice, who coached his 750th career game.
Eric Staal scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes and Cam Ward was roughed up
for five goals on 19 shots for the Hurricanes, who had a three-game winning
streak stopped. John Grahame took over for Ward halfway through the second
period and finished with 12 saves.
The Maple Leafs struck quickly as Boyd Devereaux's wrister from the right
circle squeezed between the pads of Ward just 43 seconds into the game.
However, Carolina countered just 1:30 later on a 2-on-1 break as Erik Cole
slid a pass from the right circle to the low left side where Staal tapped it
into the open net for his 29th goal of the season.
Toronto, though, notched the next two markers to take a 3-1 lead into the
Pavel Kubina got credit for a goal when, during a scrum in front, Ward
inadvertently swept the puck into his own net as he was trying to clear it out
of the crease with 5:29 left in the period.
A little over three minutes later, Kilger blasted a shot from the top of
the left circle that went over the glove of Ward.
Kilger notched his second goal of the game at the 7:17 mark of the second
period to make it a 4-1 game and over four minutes later, Perreault beat Ward
with a wrist shot on a breakaway to make it 5-1 and chase Ward from the net.
The onslaught continued in the third period as Alexei Ponikarovsky skated down
the left wing, held off a checker and from in front slid a backhander past
Grahame just 5:21 into the third to account for the final score.
Toronto plays in Atlanta on Thursday...Carolina plays in Philadelphia on
Wednesday...Toronto took three of four games against Carolina this
season...Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play...Kilger has 13 goals on
the season...Toronto has won six straight at home...Maurice has a career
record of 305-320-99-26...With the goal, Perreault notched his 500th career
point in his 800th career game.
