NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Toronto

(Tuesday, March 27th)

Final Score: Toronto 6, Carolina 1

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Chad Kilger scored twice and Andrew Raycroft made 26 saves to keep Toronto's playoff hopes alive in a 6-1 stomping of the Carolina Hurricanes at Air Canada Centre.

Yanic Perreault notched a goal and an assist for the Maple Leafs, who have won three of their last four games.

Toronto and Carolina each have 84 points and sit in a three-way tie along with the Islanders for the ninth place in the Eastern Conference.

"The fans have been louder and louder each game and we've been feeding off that," said Toronto coach Paul Maurice, who coached his 750th career game.

Eric Staal scored the lone goal for the Hurricanes and Cam Ward was roughed up for five goals on 19 shots for the Hurricanes, who had a three-game winning streak stopped. John Grahame took over for Ward halfway through the second period and finished with 12 saves.

The Maple Leafs struck quickly as Boyd Devereaux's wrister from the right circle squeezed between the pads of Ward just 43 seconds into the game.

However, Carolina countered just 1:30 later on a 2-on-1 break as Erik Cole slid a pass from the right circle to the low left side where Staal tapped it into the open net for his 29th goal of the season.

Toronto, though, notched the next two markers to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

Pavel Kubina got credit for a goal when, during a scrum in front, Ward inadvertently swept the puck into his own net as he was trying to clear it out of the crease with 5:29 left in the period.

A little over three minutes later, Kilger blasted a shot from the top of the left circle that went over the glove of Ward.

Kilger notched his second goal of the game at the 7:17 mark of the second period to make it a 4-1 game and over four minutes later, Perreault beat Ward with a wrist shot on a breakaway to make it 5-1 and chase Ward from the net.

The onslaught continued in the third period as Alexei Ponikarovsky skated down the left wing, held off a checker and from in front slid a backhander past Grahame just 5:21 into the third to account for the final score.
