Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Filip Kuba scored just 55 seconds into overtime
to lift the Tampa Bay Lightning to a 4-3 win over the New York Islanders at
St. Pete Times Forum.
In the extra session, Eric Perrin received a pass at the left circle on the
fly and let loose with a wrister that appeared to be going wide of the net,
but Kuba got his stick on it to redirect the puck into the net to win the
Perrin and Jason Ward each finished with a goal and an assist and Vincent
Lecavalier notched a goal for the Lightning, who snapped a three-game slide.
Johan Holmqvist finished the game with 21 saves for Tampa Bay, which has 84
points and currently sits in the sixth spot in the Eastern Conference. Also,
the team is four points behind Atlanta for first place in the Southeast
Tampa Bay has won eight consecutive contests against the Islanders.
Richard Zednik had a goal and an assist and Richard Park and Miroslav Satan
also lit the lamp for the Islanders, who have dropped their last four games.
Rick DiPietro returned after sitting out the previous two games with a neck
injury suffered in Montreal on March 13, but despite making 36 saves still
suffered the loss for New York, which has 79 points, one point behind Carolina
for the final playoff spot.
Tampa Bay drew first blood in the game on a power-play goal when Ward's
backhand pass from the low left side hit off the right skate of Perrin and
slid behind Dunham 9:20 into the contest.
Holmqvist only needed to make four saves in the first period to keep the
Islanders off the scoreboard.
The Lightning made it a 2-0 game as Martin St. Louis sent a pass from the deep
left boards to the slot where Lecavalier snapped a wrister over the glove of
DiPietro for his 49th goal of the season.
The Islanders, though, answered with three straight goals to take a 3-2 lead
into the third period.
Just 14 seconds after the Lecavalier goal, the Islanders won a left circle
faceoff and a quick snap shot from Zednik found its was past Holmqvist to make
it a 2-1 game.
Halfway through the period, New York tied the game with a shorthanded goal
when a wrist shot by Park beat Holmqvist over the blocker for his sixth goal
of the season.
The Islanders grabbed the lead with 2:36 left in the second as a wrist shot
from the right circle by Satan beat a screened Holmqvist for his 25th goal of
Tampa Bay, though, tied the game 4:21 into the third as Ward smacked a loose
puck into the net for his fifth goal of the season.
The Islanders return home to face Pittsburgh on Thursday...Tampa Bay hosts New
Jersey on Thursday...Tampa Bay went 1-for-6 on the power play while New York
failed to score on either of its two chances...Lecavalier has 499 points in
