NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Washington

(Sunday, March 18th)

Final Score: Washington 7, Tampa Bay 1

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Alexander Semin scored goals on three consecutive shots in the second period for a natural hat trick and Tomas Fleischmann added a pair of goals with two assists, as the Washington Capitals rolled to a 7-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at the Verizon Center.

Olaf Kolzig made 30 saves for the Capitals, who have won two in a row in dominating fashion after dropping nine straight games. Washington was coming off a 5-1 victory against Toronto on Friday.

Alexandre Giroux and Boyd Gordon also scored for the Caps, who matched their season high with seven goals. Washington also scored seven times in wins against Buffalo on December 2 and Carolina on January 27.

Filip Kuba scored the lone goal for Tampa Bay, which has lost three straight and five of its last seven. The losing streak is the club's longest since a four-game skid in mid-December.

Johan Holmqvist started in goal for the Lightning, but was yanked late in the first period after stopping 11 of 13 shots he faced. Marc Denis then made two saves to end the first period, but allowed three goals on as many shots to start the second period before Holmqvist returned.

The Capitals took a 1-0 lead just 5:31 into the contest on Fleischmann's first goal of the game. He stripped Tampa Bay defenseman Dan Boyle of the puck along the left boards, skated through the circle and sent a wrist shot through Holmqvist.

Fleischmann scored his second of the day and fourth of the season with 6:22 to play in the first period. He raced into the offensive zone and ripped a shot home from the top of the slot.

Holmqvist nearly gave up another goal to Fleischmann about three minutes later, just getting a piece of a shot from the top of the left circle, and Lightning coach John Tortorella decided to make a goaltender change.

It didn't matter who was between the pipes for Tampa Bay on this day, as Semin scored on three consecutive shots in a span of 7:04 during the second period.

Washington cashed in a power play just 1:14 into the second for a 3-0 edge, as Semin scored his 35th goal of the season on a blast from just above the left circle.

Semin then deposited a backhander past Denis at the 6:45 mark and finished his second career hat trick just 1:33 later with a snap shot through a screen from above the right circle.

Denis then left the ice and Holmqvist returned. Holmqvist finished with 20 saves.

The Lightning finally answered late in the second period when Kuba beat Kolzig with a shot from the center point for his 11th goal.

Giroux scored his second of the season midway through the third and Gordon added his fifth late in the contest to account for the final margin.

Game Notes
