Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Niklas Backstrom stopped all 29 shots he faced
for his second career shutout to help the Minnesota Wild to a 1-0 win over the
Phoenix Coyotes at Jobing.com Arena.
Marian Gaborik scored the game's only goal with Pavol Demitra assisting for
the Wild, who have won three straight and four of their last five games.
Curtis Joseph was sharp in net and stopped 29 shots but was still charged with
the loss for Coyotes, who have dropped three of their last four games.
Despite a total of 17 shots in the first period, 10 by Phoenix and seven by
the Wild, neither team got on the scoreboard in the first 20 minutes.
Minnesota made it a 1-0 game when Gaborik raced in on net on a breakaway and
snapped a wrist shot between the pads of Joseph just 12 seconds into the
Backstrom stopped eight shots in the middle stanza.
Phoenix stepped up its play in the final period and had a total of 11 shots in
the frame, but none of them found the back of the net and Minnesota held on
for the win.
Minnesota travels to Dallas for a contest on Tuesday...Phoenix next plays in
Columbus on Tuesday...Both of Backstrom's shutouts have come against Phoenix.
The previous one came during a 4-0 blanking in Minnesota on November 24,
2006...Neither team scored on the power play with Phoenix having four chances
and Minnesota three.
