Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Ryan Miller made 26 saves for his second
shutout of the season, as the Buffalo Sabres captured the Presidents' Trophy
for the most points in the NHL with a 2-0 victory over the Washington Capitals
at the Verizon Center.
Derek Roy and Tim Connolly scored first-period goals for Buffalo, which has
won three straight and will close out the regular season on Sunday in
The Sabres set a team record for wins in a season with 53 and tied a club mark
with 113 points. The previous record for victories was 52, set last year, and
the team first reached 113 points during the 1974-75 campaign -- a season that
ended with the club's first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals.
Olaf Kolzig made 22 saves for Washington, which wrapped up the 2006-07
campaign with a record of 28-40-14 to finish last in the Southeast Division
for the third consecutive season.
Miller turned aside seven shots in each of the first two periods and stopped
12 shots in the third to complete his third career shutout. He also became the
first Buffalo goaltender to reach 40 wins in a season.
The Sabres wasted little time reaching the scoreboard, as Roy tapped in the
rebound of a shot by Maxim Afinogenov for his 20th goal just 96 seconds into
Connolly's first goal of the season midway through the first increased the
lead to 2-0. Daniel Paille stripped the puck from a Washington player deep in
the Capitals zone and Connolly was able to take advantage with a shot from the
right circle that was deflected past Kolzig.
Kolzig was strong the rest of the way, stopping 10 shots in the second and
five in the third.
Washington, though, failed to capitalize on five chances with the power play,
including two opportunities in each of the final two periods.
Afinogenov played his second straight game after missing 21 with a broken
wrist. He has notched assists in both games...Roy has scored in two straight
games...Buffalo's Daniel Briere was given a game misconduct for a spearing
penalty early in the third period...Buffalo won three of the four meetings
with Washington this season and has won 10 of the last 12 matchups...The
Capitals finished their home schedule with a record of 17-17-7.
