NHL Game Summary - Buffalo at Washington

(Saturday, April 7th)

Final Score: Buffalo 2, Washington 0

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Ryan Miller made 26 saves for his second shutout of the season, as the Buffalo Sabres captured the Presidents' Trophy for the most points in the NHL with a 2-0 victory over the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.

Derek Roy and Tim Connolly scored first-period goals for Buffalo, which has won three straight and will close out the regular season on Sunday in Philadelphia.

The Sabres set a team record for wins in a season with 53 and tied a club mark with 113 points. The previous record for victories was 52, set last year, and the team first reached 113 points during the 1974-75 campaign -- a season that ended with the club's first appearance in the Stanley Cup Finals.

Olaf Kolzig made 22 saves for Washington, which wrapped up the 2006-07 campaign with a record of 28-40-14 to finish last in the Southeast Division for the third consecutive season.

Miller turned aside seven shots in each of the first two periods and stopped 12 shots in the third to complete his third career shutout. He also became the first Buffalo goaltender to reach 40 wins in a season.

The Sabres wasted little time reaching the scoreboard, as Roy tapped in the rebound of a shot by Maxim Afinogenov for his 20th goal just 96 seconds into the contest.

Connolly's first goal of the season midway through the first increased the lead to 2-0. Daniel Paille stripped the puck from a Washington player deep in the Capitals zone and Connolly was able to take advantage with a shot from the right circle that was deflected past Kolzig.

Kolzig was strong the rest of the way, stopping 10 shots in the second and five in the third.

Washington, though, failed to capitalize on five chances with the power play, including two opportunities in each of the final two periods.
