NHL Game Summary - Nashville at Phoenix|
(Thursday, February 1st)
Final Score: Phoenix 3, Nashville 2
Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Yanic Perreault's 18th goal of the season was
the difference, as the Phoenix Coyotes slipped past the Nashville Predators,
Jeremy Roenick posted a goal and an assist for the Coyotes, who won for the
third time in their last five games. Shane Doan also tallied and Curtis Joseph
made 28 saves to post his 13th win of the season.
Steve Sullivan picked up a goal and one helper for the Predators, who have
lost two in a row following a four-game winning streak. Jason Arnott scored
and Tomas Vokoun gave up three goals on 31 shots in the loss.
"When you're playing a team of this caliber everyone has to contribute," said
Coyotes head coach Wayne Gretzky. "Tonight we got a tremendous effort out of
our top players. It was a really nice team effort tonight."
With the game knotted at two, Perreault scored just 5:29 before the end of
regulation. The game-winner was the result of some good timing by Perreault,
who dropped his stick on the ice just as Nick Boynton's right point shot was
skidding wide of the goal on the far side, redirecting it into a half-open
Vokoun was pulled in the final minute, and even with the extra pressure
exerted by six Nashville skaters, Joseph was able to calmly turn aside three
Predator chances in the final seconds to seal the victory.
"The way we lost was tough," Sullivan said. "Sometimes the bounces go for you
and sometimes they don't. We have to take it one game at a time. Every team we
play now is either fighting for a playoff spot or fighting to catch us."
Nashville took a 1-0 lead on a shorthanded goal 3:54 in, when Scott Hartnell
chased down a bouncing puck from just outside the defensive zone, skated down
the left wing, and dished to Sullivan just outside the crease for an easy tap-
Roenick responded to tie the game at 11:16, pouncing on a bad clear in the
slot by Nashville and drilling a bullet by Joseph before he could set himself.
With Ed Jovanovski off for tripping, Arnott let a blazing slapper go from just
inside the left circle. The puck sailed through an inadvertent screen by
Coyotes defenseman Freddie Sjostrom and past Joseph to the short side to put
Nashville ahead, 2-1 with 5:29 gone in the third.
Doan tied the game at 8:43 thanks to a lucky bounce, as his blind backhand
flip shot from the inner edge of the left circle deflected off Predator
forward David Legwand's skate in the slot and trickled through Vokoun for his
17th goal of the season.
