NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Washington

(Saturday, March 3rd)

Final Score: NY Islanders 6, Washington 2

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Miroslav Satan scored twice, Marc-Andre Bergeron added a goal and two assists, and Ryan Smyth notched his first goal wearing a New York sweater as the Islanders routed the Washington Capitals, 6-2, at the Verizon Center.

Mike Sillinger and Chris Simon also tallied, while Tom Poti and Viktor Kozlov each had a pair of helpers for the Islanders, who are in the middle of a playoff hunt and are 7-1-1 in their last nine games. Rick DiPietro had 27 saves for New York.

Brian Pothier and Brian Sutherby scored for Washington, which has lost nine of its last 10 games and sits in last place in the Southeast Division with 60 points. Brent Johnson surrendered five goals on 23 shots before Frederic Cassivi replaced him the third period. Cassivi finished with two saves on three chances.

A power play tally put New York up 1-0 at 10:43 in the first. The Isles set up in the offense zone and moved the puck from right to left before Sillinger rifled a shot from the top of the left circle that zipped through traffic and trickled through the pads of Johnson.

Satan then doubled the Isles' margin with another marker on the man-advantage. Sean Hill rifled a shot from the point, and with traffic in front, Satan was able to tuck the disc inside the right post past a diving Johnson with 1:32 left in the stanza.

The Islanders lit the lamp on another power play chance in the middle stanza, as their cushion inflated to 3-0. With Donald Brashear off for a double-minor, Bergeron's huge slapshot beat a screened Johnson at 7:05, slipping through on the stick-side.

Simon tacked on another score to make it 4-0, banking the puck off Johnson from behind the net with 3:34 left in the second period.

Satan looked to put the exclamation point on the rout with another tally in the third. Off a nice give and go, the veteran forward powered through traffic and wristed a shot into the bottom right corner of the net to make it 5-0.

Washington finally scratched the scoreboard on a power play marker with 12:21 left in the contest. Pothier slid through traffic and wristed a shot through the five-hole of DiPietro to make it 5-1 before Washington added another goal just 34 seconds later when Sutherby knocked home a rebound chance to pull the Caps within three.

Smyth made it 6-2 at the tail end of a three-on-two rush when he stormed the crease and banged the puck past Cassivi with 2:54 remaining in the contest.
