NHL Game Summary - Edmonton at Phoenix

(Thursday, December 21st)

Final Score: Edmonton 3, Phoenix 2

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Petr Sykora scored with a 1:14 left in regulation to lift the Edmonton Oilers to a 3-2 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes.

Ales Hemsky added a goal and an assist for the Oilers, who ended a brief two- game losing streak. Backup goaltender Jussi Markkanen got the start between the pipes and made 21 saves.

"We wanted to and needed to play a good solid road game," said Markkanen.

Owen Nolan and Yanic Perreault tallied goals for the Coyotes, who have dropped two straight games and five of their last six overall. Curtis Joseph allowed three goals on 31 shots in defeat.

Sykora broke a 2-2 tie with his 15th goal of the season. Hemsky skated into the Phoenix zone along the right boards and moved the puck over Shawn Horcoff, who backhanded the disc to a streaking Sykora, who blasted the puck past a sliding Joseph from the slot.

"I was trying to hit the five hole but I kind of misfired, but it still went in," Sykora said.

The Coyotes pulled their goaltender with under a minute left but could not generate any quality scoring chances as Edmonton held on for the victory.

"It is frustrating when you lose like that," said Phoenix's Shane Doan. "We have to find ways to win the close games."

Jarret Stoll opened the scoring on a short-handed goal with just 11 seconds remaining in the opening period to give Edmonton a 1-0 lead.

The visiting team made it 2-0 on Hemsky's goal 7:47 into the second stanza. From the right circle, Hemsky quickly ripped a wrist shot that beat Joseph on the far side.

Phoenix got on the board and made it 2-1 at 10:12 of the second period courtesy of a short-handed goal by Nolan. Keith Ballard's clearing attempt was retrieved in the neutral zone by Nolan, who skated in all alone on Markkanen and slipped a backhander into the net.

The Coyotes evened the score at 2-2 after Perreault scored 3:36 into the third. On the power play, Ladislav Nagy moved the puck to Perreault at the right side of the crease. Perreault's pass attempt across the goal mouth then deflected off an Edmonton defender in front and over the goal line.
