NHL Game Summary - Atlanta at Washington

(Wednesday, November 22nd)

Final Score: Atlanta 4, Washington 2

Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Ilya Kovalchuk had a goal and an assist to lead the Atlanta Thrashers to a 4-2 win over the Washington Capitals at the Verizon Center.

Glen Metropolit, Bobby Holik and Shane Hnidy each had a goal for the Thrashers, who put the brakes on a season-high four-game skid.

Johan Hedberg stopped 24 shots for Atlanta, which is 4-0 versus Washington this year.

Jakub Klepis had a goal and an assist and Olaf Kolzig stopped 28 shots for the Capitals, who are on a season-high four-game losing streak.

Washington scored halfway through the first period to grab a 1-0 lead. On the power play, Klepis snapped a pass from the left boards to Matt Pettinger at the inside left circle. Pettinger gathered the puck and snapped a quick wrister into the right corner of the net for his fifth goal of the season.

Kolzig turned away all 10 shots he faced and Atlanta failed on all three of its power play opportunities.

The Caps took a 2-0 lead in the second when Boyd Gordon flicked a pass from behind the net to the low slot where Klepis one-timed it into the left corner just 5:03 in.

However, the Thrashers scored the next three goals to grab a 3-2 advantage.

Just 1:12 after the Klepis goal, Hnidy unleashed a slap shot from the right circle that beat Kolzig. It was the first goal in 202 games for Hnidy.

While skating on the power play, Kovalchuk slapped a shot from the top of the left circle that Holik deflected in front past Kolzig with 7:55 left in the second. The goal was No. 300 of Holik's career.

Atlanta took the lead thanks to a fortuitous bounce. Metropolit skated into the zone down the left wing and slapped a shot from the left circle that went high. The puck, however, bounced off the back glass and Metropolit tapped it out of the air from behind Kolzig with 6:59 left in the second.

The Thrashers sealed their victory when Kovalchuk picked off an errant pass at the Washington blueline and from the slot snapped a wrister over the glove of Kolzig with 6:07 to play.

Things got ugly towards the end of the game as Atlanta's Vitaly Vishnevski took a run at the Captials' Mike Green.

Following a faceoff, Donald Brashear took matters into his own hands and landed several hard shots on Vishnevski, who skated off the ice with several noticeable cuts.

That wasn't the only fracas as several more fighting majors and a total of 162 penalty minutes were assessed over the final 62 seconds of the game.
