NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Colorado

(Monday, December 11th)

Final Score: Colorado 5, Carolina 2

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Joe Sakic and Andrew Brunette each had a goal and two assists to help the Colorado Avalanche to a 5-2 victory over the Carolina Hurricanes at the Pepsi Center.

Tyler Arnason had a goal and an assist and Pierre Turgeon and John-Michael Liles each scored a goal for the Avalanche, who have won two of three.

Peter Budaj stopped 26 shots for Colorado, which is 11-0-3 (three ties) in its last 14 games against Carolina.

"We showed a lot of character tonight," said Budaj. "We wanted to make sure we outplayed them in the third period."

Justin Williams scored two goals and John Grahame stopped 25 shots for the Hurricanes, who went 0-3-1 on their four-game road trip.

"Nothing has come easy for us so far," said Williams. We scored and then we continued to sit on the lead. We don't keep pressing and we give up penalties. We are extremely frustrated and disappointed right now."

Trailing 2-1 in the third period, Colorado netted the next four goals to lead the team to victory.

Brunette tied the game when he accepted a feed from Wojtek Wolski on a 2-on-1 rush, flicked a shot on net that Grahame saved, but followed it up by stuffing in the rebound at the 8:46 mark.

The Avs regained the lead on the power play when Liles sent a pass from the high slot to Brunette at the low right side and Brunette immediately sent it back to Liles, who one-timed it under the right pad of Budaj for a 3-2 lead with 9:57 to play.

Again on the power play, Brunette had the puck behind the net and spotted Sakic cutting in from the right point and got the disc to Sakic, who one-timed it from the inside right circle to make it a 4-2 game with 7:16 to play.

"Tonight was great," said Sakic. "We have some home games to pump up for. Peter made some huge saves and allowed us to come back."

Turgeon's goal that he redirected into the net from the right side on the power play accounted for the final score.

Colorado grabbed the lead just 82 seconds in on a strong play by Arnason, who flicked a strong backhander on net and followed up the rebound by snapping a wrister over a sprawled-out Grahame for a 1-0 lead.

Budaj was strong in the first period and stopped several good opportunities to post 11 saves in the first period.

The Hurricanes tied the game 1:44 into the second on a 5-on-3 goal. Eric Staal snapped a pass from the top of the left circle down low on the right side to Cory Stillman, who held the puck and centered it where it went off of Williams and into the net.

Grahame made several nice saves without a stick during a Colorado power play, including a point-blank shot by Sakic about halfway through the second period.

Carolina grabbed the lead just 68 seconds into the third when Williams grabbed a loose puck at the left boards, skated out to the slot and snapped a wrister between the pads of Budaj for a 2-1 advantage.
