San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Vesa Toskala stopped 23 shots for his third
shutout of the season to lead the San Jose Sharks to a 4-0 victory over the
Phoenix Coyotes at HP Pavilion.
Milan Michalek had a goal and an assist and Patrick Marleau and Joe Thornton
each finished with three assists for the Sharks, who have won two straight and
seven of their last nine games.
Curtis Joseph finished with 30 saves for the Coyotes, who have lost three of
their last four games.
Michalek's power-play goal with just 1:29 to play in the first period gave the
Sharks a 1-0 lead heading into the locker room.
Toskala only needed to stop six shots in the opening frame.
The Sharks grabbed a 2-0 lead with 4:29 left in the second period when Marleau
slid a pass from the left boards to Steve Bernier at the inside left circle
and Bernier lifted a wrister over the glove of Joseph.
Joe Pavelski's fifth goal of the season came on the power play with 2:19 left
in the second period on assists from Thornton and Marleau to give San Jose a
3-0 lead heading into the third.
Curtis Brown's goal just 4:19 into the third period made it a 4-0 game and
Toskala turned aside nine shots in the frame to preserve the shutout.
Toskala has seven shutouts in his career...The Sharks play a home-and-home set
with the Kings starting in LA on Tuesday and finishing in San Jose on
Thursday...Phoenix plays in Vancouver on Tuesday...San Jose has won three
straight in the series...Thornton has one goal and seven assists in his last
