Uniondale, NY (Sports Network) - Tom Poti's power play goal, 23 seconds into
overtime, lifted the New York Islanders to a 4-3 come-from-behind victory over
the Carolina Hurricanes at Nassau Coliseum.
Trailing 3-2 with 3:10 left in regulation, the Islanders tied the game on a
power play when Mike Sillinger's wrist shot from the left circle found the net
on John Grahame's glove side.
Poti then netted the game-winner with assists from Alexei Yashin and Miroslav
Satan. It was a shot from inside the blue line with the puck finding its way
through a maze of players and into the net.
Jason Blake and Mike York rounded out the scoring for the Islanders, who have
won three of their last five contests.
Rick DiPietro, who had been sidelined by a groin injury the previous four
games, made 37 saves, including 14 in the third period. It was his first win
of the season
Grahame stopped 21 shots.
Justin Williams tallied twice and Rod Brind'Amour also scored and notched two
assists for the Hurricanes, who have lost two straight. Grahame stopped 21
shots in the loss.
After a scoreless first period, the Islanders took the lead on Blake's power-
play goal. Sillinger fed the puck to Blake near the left circle, whose wrister
sailed past the glove of Grahame at the 7:53 mark.
Less than two minutes into the third, York's snap shot deflected off the pads
of a sprawled-out Grahame to give New York a two-goal advantage.
The Hurricanes then scored three straight goals to take the lead. Williams'
short-handed wrap-around goal on the left side of the net cut Carolina's
deficit to 2-1 at the 6:38 mark in the third. Brind'Amour and Tim Gleason
Just under two minutes later, Williams tied the game on the power play when
his slap shot sailed past the left shoulder of DiPietro.
Brind'Amour gave his team a one-goal lead when he tipped the disc in the right
side of the net after taking a pass from Ryan Bayda 14:34 into the third.
Carolina scored its second shorthanded goal of the season...Yashin played in
his 800th game...Carolina's Ray Whitney recorded his 600th point...Williams
got his seventh power-play point, which leads Carolina...Sillinger has scored
in four straight games...Attendance was 12,349.
