Washington, DC (Sports Network) - Nikita Alexeev scored a pair of goals
for a career-high five-game points streak to lead the Tampa Bay Lightning
over the Washington Capitals, 6-4, at the Verizon Center.
Vincent Lecavalier, Martin St. Louis, Andreas Karlsson and Brad Richards also
scored for the Lightning, who have won three of four and notched a season high
in goals scored despite playing without injured center and leading goal-scorer
Ryan Craig. Marc Denis stopped 29-of-33 shots.
Alexander Ovechkin scored a pair of goals for the Capitals, who lost their
second straight. Mike Green and Brian Sutherby also scored and Alexander Semin
added a pair of assists. Olaf Kolzig also blocked 29 shots.
Lecavalier scored a shorthanded slap shot 5:51 into the first. Less than a
minute later, Ovechkin tied the score, 1-1, on a backhander on the
Green scored on a slap shot 16:07 into the first for a 2-1 Washington lead
heading into the first intermission.
"It hurt our chances to win when they had a lead going into the second
period," Washington coach Glen Hanlon said.
Tampa Bay scored two straight goals to take the lead 3:32 into the second. St.
Louis scored on a short wraparound slap shot 3:10 into the period and Alexeev
blasted a slap shot from the top of the right circle glove side just 22
The Lightning added to their lead, 4-2, when Karlsson slipped in a tip-in with
a tick under a minute left in the second. Alexeev also tipped in a score, 9:04
into the third on the power play for a 5-2 Lightning lead.
Sutherby scored a slap shot from the point as he lifted the puck just
past the netminder's shoulder 12:38 into the third, but Richards scored a
wrister unassisted 39 seconds later for a 6-3 Tampa lead.
Ovechkin scored with just under four minutes left to play when he tipped in a
shot on the power play for the final margin.
Tampa finished 1-for-7 on the power play, while Washington was 2-for-3.
Craig suffered a sprained right knee in Thursday's 4-1 victory over
Philadelphia...Tampa Bay and Washington each won four games in the 2005-06
season series. The Lightning have won eight of the last 12 meetings, but have
lost three of their last five at Washington.
