NHL Game Summary - NY Rangers at Ottawa

(Saturday, December 9th)

Final Score: NY Rangers 3, Ottawa 1

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Jaromir Jagr scored a goal and added an assist, as the New York Rangers edged the Ottawa Senators, 3-1, at Scotiabank Place.

Henrik Lundqvist stopped 34-of-35 shots and Martin Straka tallied his 16th goal of the season and added an assist as the Rangers have only one regulation loss in their last nine games.

Jason Spezza scored the lone goal of the contest for the Senators, who will travel to Columbus to play the Blue Jackets Sunday night, which begins a four-game road trip for Ottawa.

Senators goaltender Ray Emery allowed two goals on 28 shots.

"Obviously tonight we didn't score as many goals as they did, but Razor (Emery) played big for us," Spezza said. "It's an unfortunate and disappointing loss."

Both teams came out hitting early and had several chances, but the game remained scoreless until late in the stanza.

With the Rangers on a 5-on-3 man advantage, Jagr, from the top of the right circle fed a cross-ice pass to Straka, who was standing just to the left of Emery and had a easy tap in, giving New York the early lead.

The Rangers added to their 1-0 advantage 6:07 into the second frame when Jagr picked up a loose puck and skated it into the Senators' zone. Making a nice shift into the high slot, Jagr took an off-balance shot and put it just under the crossbar to beat the Ottawa netminder and increase the Blueshirts' lead to 2-0.

"We're definitely improving and somehow we won the game with only two goals," Jagr said. "We continued to go to the net and Henrik made some great saves for us."

Ottawa finally got on the board with just over four minutes left in the second period and on the power play. With Straka off the ice for tripping, Christoph Schubert received a pass at the left point and took a slap shot toward the New York net. Spezza, trying to set a screen on Lundqvist, deflected the puck past Lundqvist to cut the deficit to 2-1.

Both goaltender's stopped breakaway chances late in the stanza and the Rangers held the 2-1 lead through two periods of play.

The Senators applied the offensive pressure early in the third period, but Lundqvist continued to have the answers for the Rangers.

Jagr, bidding for his second tally of the contest, hit the goal post on a backhander midway through the period.

The score stayed 2-1 until the final minute of play. With Ottawa playing with the goaltender pulled, Brendan Shanahan scored an empty-net goal for the final margin.
