Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Mike Smith made his NHL debut worthwhile, stopping all 22 shots he faced as Dallas smoked Phoenix, 4-0, at Glendale Arena.

Mike Ribeiro, Mike Modano, Philippe Boucher and Darryl Sydor each scored for the Stars, who matched the 1996-97 Stars for the best start after eight games in franchise history (7-1-0).

The Coyotes, on other hand, are off to their worst start since the 1994-95 season, having lost six of their last seven games. Curtis Joseph yielded all four Dallas goals on 32 shots.

The Stars drew first blood 9:18 into the opening period as Ribeiro scored on a pretty tic-tac-toe play.

From the high slot, Antti Miettinen hit Brenden Morrow in the right circle and he one-timed a pass to the left circle for Ribeiro, who one-timed that feed past Joseph for his third goal of the season.

Dallas built a 2-0 lead in the second period as Joseph misplayed a puck behind the net. The puck bounced off Joseph's stick and out in front of the net and after Joseph dived to stop Jere Lehtinen's initial shot, Modano stuffed in the rebound with 8:02 left in the period.

Then, while on the power play just 3:52 into the final period, Boucher one- time a pass from Steve Ott through Joseph's five-hole.

Ott then set up another goal for the Stars, skating around Phoenix defenseman Dennis Seidenberg before firing a back-handed shot on net. Sydor was there to clean up the rebound with 13:16 left to play.

Game Notes

The Stars finished 1-for-9 on the power play, while Phoenix squandered seven chances with the man-advantage...Modano has more points against the Coyotes than any other player in the league, having recorded 32 goals and 51 assists in 76 career games.
