Tampa, FL (Sports Network) - Sheldon Souray scored two power-play goals to
lead the Montreal Canadiens to a 3-1 victory over the Tampa Bay Lightning at
St. Pete Times Forum.
Guillaume Latendresse scored the other goal and Cristobal Huet stopped 29
shots for the Canadiens, who have won three of their last four games.
"We did a good job in the offensive zone and the defensive zone and we
didn't have too many turnovers," said Huet.
Vinny Prospal scored the lone goal and Marc Denis stopped 25 shots for the
Lightning, who had won four of five coming into the contest.
"We gave them the game on the special teams," said Prospal. "We gave them the
penalties and they scored the power-play goals."
The Canadiens took a 1-0 lead in the first period when a slap shot by Souray
at the right point found its way through a screen and past Denis just 2:35
into the contest for a power-play tally.
Huet was peppered with 15 shots in the first period, but he turned all of
The Lightning broke onto the scoreboard with an even-strength marker in the
second. Cory Sarich's shot from the right point was tipped in front by Prospal
through the five-hole of Huet 7:22 in.
Montreal, though, grabbed a 2-1 lead later in the second on a 5-on-3 power-
play goal. Just eight seconds after Luke Richardson got called for tripping,
with Filip Kuba already in the sin bin, Souray let loose a blast from the
right point the beat Denis with 4:48 left in the second.
The Lightning had a golden opportunity to tie the game in the third when Brad
Richards found himself with the puck all alone down low on a shorthanded
chance. Huet, though, poked the puck away before he was able to get a shot
The Habs took the puck up ice on the transition and from the left circle
Latendresse snapped a wrister that beat Denis over the glove for a 3-1 lead
with 10:36 to play.
Montreal wraps up its four-game road trip at Florida on Thursday...Tampa Bay
hosts the Lightning on Friday...Seven of Souray's eight goals this season have
come on the power play...Lightning captain Tim Taylor left with a neck strain
in the second period and did not return...Montreal has won four of its last
five games against Tampa Bay, including three straight as the visitors...The
Habs went 3-for-8 on the power play while the Lightning were held scoreless on
their five man advantage opportunities.
