San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Brett Clark and Joe Sakic each had two goals
and an assist to lead Colorado past San Jose, 5-2, at the HP Pavilion.
Brett McLean also scored, while Wojtek Wolski had two helpers for the
Avalanche, who halted a brief two-game skid.
Jose Theodore finished with 28 saves for Colorado.
Joe Thornton had a goal and an assist while Jonathan Cheechoo also scored for
the Sharks, who have dropped two straight after winning five in a row. Vesa
Toskala yielded all five Colorado goals on 25 shots.
After the teams traded goals through the first half of the game, Colorado
scored twice late in the second period to forge ahead 4-2.
With 5:48 remaining before the second intermission, McLean and Milan Hejduk
broke free for a 2-on-1 as McLean used Hejduk as a decoy before beating
Toskala stick-side to give the Avs a 3-2 lead.
San Jose had a great opportunity to even the score just 46 seconds later when
Mike Grier was awarded a penalty shot. However, Theodore came up with a huge
pad save to deny Grier.
Then, with just 53.1 seconds left in the second, Clark beat a screened Toskala
for the second time to make it 4-2.
"That's huge, (Clark) scores, the ball game's right there so that's probably
the turning point in that game," said Sakic.
Sakic's second goal of the game, a power play tally 7:34 into the final
period, gave Colorado a three-goal advantage.
The Avs drew first blood with 8:50 left in the opening period as Clark one-
timed a shot top-shelf for his first score of the game.
San Jose responded just over two minutes later on Cheechoo's power play goal,
his eighth of the season.
Sakic's first goal of the game 4:07 into the second period put the Avs up 2-1
before Thornton made it 2-2 about four minutes later.
"We knew we had to come out with intense effort, especially against a great
team," said Clark. "(San Jose) is playing very well. They've got a lot of
threats out there and we had to come out flying with all cylinders and we did
that right from the start and kept it going for a full 60 minutes."
Sakic needs one more assist to tie Al MacInnis for 12th place on the all-time
assist list with 934. He is also just 15 goals away from the 600 plateau...The
win gave Theodore 150 for his career...Avs center Pierre Turgeon, who
missed the first 27 games of the season due to a shoulder injury, was
activated against San Jose...It was the first two-goal game of Clark's
