NHL Game Summary - Carolina at Edmonton

(Wednesday, December 6th)

Final Score: Edmonton 3, Carolina 1

Edmonton, AB (Sports Network) - Jason Smith's late second period goal was the game-winner, as the Edmonton Oilers posted a 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes at Rexall Place.

Craig Adams scored for the Hurricanes, who have dropped two in a row. Cam Ward made 21 saves in a losing return to his hometown.

Brad Winchester and Fernando Pisani tallied, and Jussi Markkanen stopped 28 shots for the Oilers, who have won two straight to snap out of a three-game losing streak.

It was a rematch of the 2006 Stanley Cup Finals, which the Hurricanes won in a seventh-game in Raleigh. This was the first meeting between the teams in the province of Alberta since Game 6 of the Finals on June 17th, a 4-0 Oilers win.

Edmonton grabbed a 1-0 lead 2:30 into the second, thanks to some old-fashioned hard work. Marty Reasoner chipped the puck deep into the Hurricane zone to the right of the net, and Winchester fought off his man, gained control of the disc, turned and fired along the goal line. Ward, not expecting a shot from such a bad angle, moved slightly off the post, and the shot sailed right over his shoulder.

Carolina tied the game at 11:58 when Belanger's spinning shot from the left circle was unintentionally tipped in front by Adams. The puck slowed and changed direction, beating Markkanen through the five-hole.

However, the Oilers went back on top, 2-1 with a minute to play when Raffi Torres won a right circle draw back to Smith at the point, and his blast seemed to hit Pisani's stick on its way past Ward, but Smith was credited with the goal.

Edmonton would go up 3-1, just 1:44 into the third, when Steve Staios' point shot hit two bodies in front and skipped out to Pisani, whose shot hit an open net as Ward tried to scramble back into position.

Carolina's only threat to draw within a goal came courtesy of a power play with 1:53 remaining, but the Hurricanes only put one shot on goal despite also pulling Ward for a 6-on-4 manpower advantage.
