NHL Game Summary - Vancouver at Minnesota

(Tuesday, October 10th)

Final Score: Minnesota 2, Vancouver 1 (SO)

St. Paul, MN (Sports Network) - Petteri Nummelin scored the game-winning goal in a shootout to lift the Minnesota Wild past the Vancouver Canucks, 2-1, at Xcel Energy Center.

After goals by Vancouver's Markus Naslund and Minnesota's Pavol Demitra, Daniel Sedin's shot was denied by Manny Fernandez, but Mikko Koivu's backhand goal gave the Wild the advantage.

Brendan Morrison, though, tied it with shot between Fernandez's pads, and after Jan Bulis' shot was stopped by Fernandez, Nummelin netted the winner with backhand shot on the glove side of Roberto Luongo.

Brian Rolston also scored and Nummelin added an assist for the Wild, who have opened the season with three straight victories for the first time in franchise history.

"We've got to win our games at home," Rolston said. "We have tremendous fan support and have to use that to our advantage."

Fernandez stopped 30 of the 31 shots he faced, including 17 in the second period.

Taylor Pyatt scored the lone regulation goal for Vancouver, which has lost two straight after winning their first two games.

Luongo, who looked stellar in regulation, made 35 saves in defeat.

"It's disappointing to lose a game like tonight," said Luongo.

The Canucks failed to convert on the power play, finishing 0-for-4.

With just under two minutes to go in overtime, Minnesota had a chance for the win as Todd White soared down the right side on a breakaway, but his backhand shot was denied by a sprawled-out Luongo.

Vancouver took a 1-0 lead at the 9:15 mark in the second period when Pyatt's snap shot sailed past Fernandez's glove side. Sedin set up the goal with a backhand pass from behind the net and Ryan Kesler also assisted on the scoring play.

Rolston's power play goal 11:33 into the third tied the game. Nummelin hit Rolston with a pass, who skated up the left side and scored with a wrist shot that ricocheted through Luongo's legs and into the net.
