NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at Philadelphia

(Saturday, December 2nd)

Final Score: New Jersey 4, Philadelphia 3 (SO)

Philadelphia, PA (Sports Network) - Brad Lukowich scored short-handed in the third period to force overtime and the Devils scored twice in the shootout, as New Jersey bested Philadelphia, 4-3.

Zach Parise and Brian Gionta both scored on back-handed shots in the shootout for New Jersey, which has won two straight after a four-game losing streak with all four defeats coming on the road.

Parise also scored in regulation -- his ninth of the year -- and Patrik Elias tallied his seventh goal of the season for New Jersey, while Martin Brodeur made 22 saves.

Mike Knuble scored in his fourth straight game while Todd Fedoruk and Randy Jones also netted goals for the Flyers, who came into the game winners in three of their last four.

Fedoruk also had an assist in his debut for the Flyers this season. Fedoruk had missed his last 18 games after facial injuries sustained in a fight in late October while with Anaheim.

He was traded to Philadelphia on November 13th.

The Flyers were without star center Peter Forsberg, who has missed time this season with ankle and foot problems but sat out this contest with the flu.

Down 3-2, Lukowich extended the game after a short-handed tally with 2:12 remaining in the third. John Madden dug the puck out from along the right boards and hit Lukowich with a pass. The defender skated above the left circle and rifled the puck past Antero Niittymaki as Jay Pandolfo crashed into the Philadelphia netminder.

The goal was reviewed for goaltender interference, but was quickly upheld as the puck was already in the net when Pandolfo made contact with Niittymaki.

The Flyers still had over a minute left of power-play time, but failed to score as the game headed into overtime.

Niittymaki ended with 29 saves but failed to make a stop in the shootout, while Brodeur stopped both Simon Gagne and Petr Nedved.

Fedoruk's goal on a redirection from the right slot 1:37 in staked Philadelphia to an early lead, which the Flyers pushed to two with 2:52 left in the first on a goal by Jones.

The Devils answered, though, just 49 seconds later to cut their deficit in half. Parise held the puck behind the net to the left and attempted a centering feed that hit off of Philadelphia's Joni Pitkanen's skate and past an unsuspecting Niittymaki.

New Jersey netted the lone goal of the second frame to tie things at 2-2. The goal came off the stick of Elias, who fired a long shot on Niittymaki. The puck hit off the Philadelphia netminders' glove and trickled behind him before crossing the goal line with seven minutes left.

The Flyers opened up the third period on the power play and cashed in to take the lead. Knuble grabbed the puck between the two circles and fired a shot into the net with Randy Robitaille stationed in front of Brodeur just 24 seconds into the third.

Game Notes

The Flyers called up Ryan Potulny from the Philadelphia Phantoms of the AHL to replace Forsberg. Potulny assisted on Fedoruk's goal...Knuble has six points in his last six games...Philadelphia has lost two straight at home...The Flyers finished 1-for-5 on the power play while the Devils were 0-for-3.
