NHL Game Summary - Colorado at St. Louis |
(Thursday, November 2nd)
Final Score: St. Louis 4, Colorado 1
St. Louis, MO (Sports Network) - Manny Legace stopped 44 shots and Bill Guerin
scored two goals, as the St. Louis Blues defeated the Colorado Avalanche, 4-1,
at Scottrade Center.
Dan Hinote and Bryce Salvador also scored for the Blues, who won for only the
second time in their last seven games (2-3-2). Doug Weight added three assists
in the victory.
"(Colorado) has been averaging 40 shots per game, so I knew it was going to
come," said Legace. "I like seeing shots, but not that many."
Ken Klee scored the lone goal for Colorado, which saw its brief two-game win
Peter Budaj allowed four goals on 29 shots in the losing effort.
The Blues opened the scoring when Hinote notched his second goal of the season
with 8:43 remaining in the first period. Hinote hustled down the left side on
a partial breakaway and, as he was falling down near the goal mouth, lifted
the puck through Budaj's legs.
After Guerin's first goal of the game at the 1:42 mark of the middle session
gave the hosts a two-goal edge, Colorado controlled most of the action
throughout the remainder of the stanza but could not solve Legace.
The Avalanche outshot the Blues 18-6 in the stanza, but it was Salvador who
found the net in the latter stages for a 3-0 lead. Weight held the puck along
the left half-wall and sent a pass that was directed toward Keith Tkachuk in
the slot. However, the puck bounced over Tkachuk's stick and slid to the right
post, where Salvador easily deposited a backhander into an open net at 16:57.
Colorado found the scoreboard less than a minute later. Brett McLean corralled
the puck inside the right circle and sent a pass through traffic into the slot
for a successful one-timer by Klee with 2:13 to play before the second
Guerin, who nearly scored on a breakaway with 6:15 remaining in regulation,
capped the scoring at 17:25 of the third. He led a 3-on-2 break across the
middle of the blue line and dished to Martin Rucinsky on his left side.
Rucinsky then sent a nice cross-ice pass to Weight inside the right circle.
Weight's wrist shot was saved by Budaj, but Guerin was in perfect position at
the left post and he punched home the rebound.
"We (Weight, Rucinsky and Guerin) have to be a big part of our offense and
score on a consistent basis," said Weight. "The beginning of the year was a
little sluggish, but over the last two weeks we've felt really good and really
confident. We want to carry that into every game and become a big-time
