NHL Game Summary - Los Angeles at San Jose

(Tuesday, January 24th)

Final Score: San Jose 4, Los Angeles 1

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Patrick Marleau recorded two goals and an assist while Evgeni Nabokov stopped all but one of the 16 shots he faced, as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Los Angeles Kings, 4-1, at the Shark Tank.

Nils Ekman and Milan Michalek also scored for San Jose, which has won eight of its last 10 games overall. Marleau was the hero in Saturday's meeting between these teams, when he notched the game-winner during the Sharks' 4-3 overtime victory in Los Angeles.

"I'm happy that we are healthy right now and we're playing good," said Ekman.

Joe Corvo tallied the lone goal for the Kings, who have dropped four of their last five road games. Jason LaBarbera allowed three goals on 29 shots in the losing effort.

Holding a 1-0 lead in the latter stages of the second period, the Sharks took control with two power-play goals in a 3:10 span. Both tallies were scored during a four-minute high-sticking minor called on Corvo.

"The story of the hockey game was the second period," said Kings head coach Andy Murray. "I thought we wore ourselves out killing penalties."

A smart play by Marleau paved the way for San Jose's second goal. The Sharks captain circled back out of the offensive zone to allow his teammates to clear and get on-sides. From just outside the blue line, Marleau spotted a streaking Ekman, who barreled down the slot, shifted to the left and fired home a wrist shot from the top of the circle at 14:02.

Over three minutes later, at 17:12, San Jose grabbed a three-goal lead when Michalek notched his ninth goal of the season. Strong work along the left half-wall by Jonathan Cheechoo kept the puck in the zone. Cheechoo eventually gained sole control and fed a pass down low to Michalek, who was all alone in front and easily beat LaBarbera up high with a wrist shot.

With 14:08 remaining in regulation, the Kings finally got on the board when Corvo scored his 11th goal on the power play. Corvo walked in from the left point and sent a rocket past Nabokov into the far upper corner to make it 3-1.

The Kings had several power plays down the stretch, including a five-minute major to San Jose's Joe Thornton for boarding, but were unable to beat Nabokov despite several good looks from in close.

Murray is known for pulling his goaltender for the extra skater much earlier than most teams and did just that, as the Kings skated 6-on-5 with two-plus minutes to play. But Marleau netted his second marker of the contest into the open cage for the final margin.

The Kings have lost eight straight games in San Jose. Their last victory here came on March 18, 2002.

Marleau opened the scoring just 2:46 into the contest with his 20th goal.
