St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - Olli Jokinen scored two goals,
including the game-winner 3:15 into overtime, as the Florida Panthers defeated
the Tampa Bay Lightning 3-2 at the St. Pete Times Forum.
Roberto Luongo made 48 saves and Chris Gratton tallied his sixth goal of the
year for Florida, which snapped a three-game losing streak.
"We stuck it out, especially when we led twice at the end of the game," Luongo
said. "We battled back and scored a good goal in OT."
"Without him (Luongo), we wouldn't have any points tonight," Jokinen said.
Brad Richards and Ryan Craig scored a goal apiece and Sean Burke stopped 23 of
the 26 shots he faced for Tampa Bay, which had its three-game wining streak
"I couldn't be happier as far as how hard they played and then they turned it
up in the overtime, that's what I liked," Tampa bay head coach John Tortorella
said. "They tried to win so we'll take that point and go from there."
With 1:45 left in overtime, Jokinen scored the game-winner after he one-timed
a rebound from the left circle that beat Burke stick-side. Martin Gelinas
blasted a shot from the right circle that was saved by Burke, but the rebound
kicked to Jokinen in the left circle, where he had a gaping net at which to
Florida grabbed a 1-0 lead midway through the second period after Gratton
rifled a wrist shot from the right circle that went over Burke's left
Tampa Bay tied the game with 3:51 left to play in regulation. Richards threw
the puck in front from behind the Panthers' net, and it caromed off of
Gratton's skate and through Luongo's five-hole to make it 1-1.
Just 39 seconds later, the Panthers regained the lead after Jokinen took a
cross-ice feed and unleashed a one-timer that beat Burke top-shelf for a 2-1
The Lightning netted the equalizer with 48.3 ticks left on the clock. Craig
gathered a pass in the slot and beat Luongo stick-side high to force overtime.
Tampa Bay outshot Florida 50-26, the first time in franchise history that the
Lightning registered 50 shots at home...The Lightning finished 0-for-6 on the
power play, while Florida went 0-for-3...Richards extended his point streak
to six games. He has three goals and three helpers during the
stretch...This was Florida's first win in its last eight trips to Tampa.
The Panthers had five losses and two ties in their previous seven games
there...The Lightning have not allowed a power-play goal in five straight
games...Jokinen has four goals and four assists in his last five games against
