Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Keith Ballard scored two goals, including the
winner in overtime, as the Phoenix Coyotes beat the Los Angeles Kings, 6-5, at
Paul Mara added two goals and Curtis Joseph stopped 35 shots for Phoenix,
which has won two in a row and four of its last five games.
Derek Armstrong had a hat-trick and Jason LaBarbera saved 20-of-26 shots for
Los Angeles, which had a two-game winning streak snapped.
With the game knotted at 5-5 in overtime, Mike Ricci dumped the puck into the
zone for Ballard, who beat the defense down the ice and unleashed a wrister
from the slot to win the game with 3:52 elapsed.
Phoenix opened the scoring 2:53 into the game, when Ladislav Nagy skated down
the right circle with the puck on his backhand, switched to his forehand and
put the puck around LaBarbera.
Phoenix then went up 2-0 on a Mara wrister from the left circle.
Los Angeles cut the lead in half 13:09 into the first frame, as Armstrong
scored his first goal of the night on a redirected slapshot from Joseph Corvo.
Mike Comrie shot a wrister from the slot that went through the five-hole of
LaBarbera for a power-play goal to put the Coyotes up 3-1 with 9:01 left in
the second period.
Los Angeles came back 24 seconds later, as Steve Avery connected for the
short-handed goal to cut the deficit to 3-2.
The Kings tied the game with 6:12 left in the second frame, when Michael
Cammalleri skated from behind the net and backhanded the puck past the right
shoulder of Joseph.
With just over a minute gone by in the third period, Phoenix jumped back in
front, as Nagy left a drop pass just across the blue line, Ballard
picked it up, skated down the slot and shot a wrister over the LaBarbera's
Los Angeles came back and tied the score at 4-4. Armstrong connected for a
power-play goal, his second goal of the night, when he shot a wrister from the
right of Joseph into the net 4:52 into the third stanza.
The Coyotes went in front 29 seconds later on the power play, as Mara shot a
wrister from the high slot that went past LaBarbera low left into the net.
With 1:11 left in the in the third, the Kings tied the game once again on an
Nagy missed a penalty shot wide left 3:24 into the second period...Eric
Belanger did not return to the Kings after suffering a lower-body injury in
the third period...Aaron Miller was a scratch...This is the fourth game
between the two teams, and the home team has won each time...Los Angeles is
11-9-1 on the road.
