Calgary, AB (Sports Network) - Scottie Upshall scored the decisive goal in the
third period to cap a 4-3 comeback victory for the Nashville Predators over
the Calgary Flames at Pengrowth Saddledome.
Adam Hall, Vernon Fiddler and Jerred Smithson all tallied goals for the
Predators, who have won six straight games.
Tomas Vokoun turned aside 23 shots in the victory.
Rookie defenseman Dion Phaneuf had a goal and an assist for the Flames, who
had a modest two-game win streak snapped.
Philippe Sauve allowed four goals on 40 shots.
Trailing 3-2 in the final frame, Nashville netted two goals in the third to
take the lead.
After a battle behind the Calgary net for a loose puck, Jordin Tootoo swept
the disc out in front where Smithson poked it past Sauve on his stick side.
With 6:47 left in regulation the Flames went up 4-3 after Upshall netted his
fourth of the season. At the right side of the net, Greg Johnson slipped a
pass across to Upshall and he backhanded the puck into the top left corner.
With about 1:50 to go in regulation, Marcus Nilson fired a rebound in front
back at Vokoun, who made a sliding pad save. The Flames pulled the goalie with
a minute to go, but did not generate any scoring chances.
Calgary drew first blood scoring 5:42 into the opening period. On the power
play, Nilson one-timed a pass from Andrew Ference at the right faceoff circle
that slipped through Vokoun's five-hole.
With 25 seconds left in the first, the Flames went up 2-0 with a power-play
tally. Paul Kariya's clearing attempt was knocked down at the blueline by
Phaneuf, who blasted a heavy slap shot high, glove side on Vokoun.
The Predators got on the board at the 7:37 mark of the second stanza with a
power-play goal. Hall deflected Dan Hamhuis' shot from the left point out
of mid-air and down to the ice, causing the puck to bounce over Sauve's
blocker and into the net.
A power-play tally by Fiddler with 5:55 remaining in the second tied things up
With 2:22 left until the second intermission, Kristian Huselius came around
from behind the net and banked the puck off Vokoun's back and into the net for
the 3-2 Calgary lead.
Nashville has won three in a row over Calgary...The Predators improved to
8-4-3 on the road...Predators defenseman Kimmo Timonen saw a five-game point
streak come to an end...Darcy Hordichuk had two assists for Nashville and Hall
had a helper as well...The Predators were 2-for-8 on the power play while the
Flames went 2-for-5 with the man advantage.
