NHL Game Summary - San Jose at Toronto

(Saturday, December 3rd)

Final Score: San Jose 5, Toronto 4

Toronto, ON (Sports Network) - Patrick Marleau scored a goal and picked up two assists as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Toronto Maple Leafs, 5-4, at Air Canada Centre.

Vesa Toskala made 24 saves for the Sharks, who won their second straight game after ending a 10-game losing streak Friday night in Buffalo. Toskala was recalled earlier in the day because starting goaltender Evgeni Nabokov left Friday's win with a groin injury.

Alyn McCauley scored two goals and Joe Thornton picked up two assists and now has four points in two games since being acquired in a trade with Boston earlier in the week.

Ed Belfour allowed five goals on 27 shots as Toronto lost for only the second time in the last five games. With the loss, Belfour remains tied with Terry Sawchuk for second on the all-time wins list with 447.

Jason Allison scored a goal and added an assist for Toronto in the loss.

With the Leafs up 3-1 in the second period, San Jose used three goals to win for the first time at Toronto since 1999.

About 5 1/2 minutes into the second stanza, Marleau slipped home a rebound at the left side of the net after a Thornton shot, getting San Jose back into the game at 3-2.

The Sharks tied the game at 3-3 after McCauley scored from the slot at 8:51 of the second period after taking a pass from Marleau along the right boards.

Mark Smith netted a shorthanded goal at 11:46 giving San Jose a 4-3 lead. Smith skated in all alone on Belfour and let go a wrist shot that beat the goaltender low on the stick side.

With a two-man advantage in the final period, the Sharks went up 5-3 after McCauley buried a rebound for his second goal of the game with 5:45 to play.

Allison scored on a wraparound goal at 17:21 getting the Leafs back into the game at 5-4.

Toronto was unable to tie the game as they pulled Belfour with around a minute to play, but couldn't generate any scoring chances.

San Jose opened the scoring 4:10 into the contest. Scott Hannan came in from his point position and Marleau hit him with a pass from the right circle that Hannan fired past Belfour.

Darcy Tucker evened things up at 1-1 less than two minutes later. Mats Sundin's wrist shot from the left circle was stopped by Toskala but Tucker followed up the play, backhanding home the rebound.

The Leafs went up 2-1 after Eric Lindros one-timed home a pass from Alex Steen on the power play at 9:26.

Matt Stajan gave Toronto a 3-1 edge with his fourth goal of the season. Stajan darted into the San Jose zone along the right boards and past the defense, crashing the net attempting to stuff the puck home. Toskala made the save, but the rebound bounced up and behind him, crossing the goal line at 10:44.
