NHL Game Summary - Boston at New Jersey

(Tuesday, November 29th)

Final Score: New Jersey 3, Boston 2

East Rutherford, NJ (Sports Network) - Alexander Mogilny snapped a tie game with just 31.4 seconds left in the contest to lead the New Jersey Devils past the Boston Bruins, 3-2, at Continental Airlines Arena.

Brian Gionta and Jay Pandolfo added goals for the Devils, who have won a season-high three straight games. Martin Brodeur made 21 saves in the victory.

Patrice Bergeron and Sergei Samsonov netted goals for the Bruins, who have dropped their last three contests. Andrew Raycroft made 31 saves in the loss.

With the game tied at 2-2, New Jersey took the lead late in the game thanks to a key offensive-zone faceoff win. The puck was dropped in the left circle and Madden won the faceoff and drew the puck back to his right. Mogilny jumped on the disc and one-timed it into the right corner of the net, his ninth goal of the season, to put the Devils ahead 3-2 with only 31.4 seconds left.

"You don't want to get greedy, you just want to make sure the puck gets through," said Mogilny. "The goaltender was screened and that always helps. It was a big game for us, we didn't play very well tonight but we found a way to win."

Mogilny had left the game early in the third period after getting hit in the face with a stick, but returned in time to be the deciding factor.

The Bruins quickly pulled Raycroft, but were unable to score in the final seconds.

"We had three or four of them (games) this year that we've been killed in the last minute," said Raycroft. "We got to bear down and not let guys get shots like that in the last minute."

Boston opened up the scoring with a first period power-play goal. Brian Leetch sent a pass from the right point to Bergeron, who was positioned at the top of the left circle. His one-timer then went past a sliding Brodeur and into the net at the 8:49 mark.

The visitors took a 2-0 lead early in the second session as Hal Gill sent a shot from the right point towards the net. The puck was tipped in front by Samsonov and went into the goal just 30 seconds into the period.

The Devils finally got on the board after the halfway mark of the second period. Colin White let a shot fly from the left point and Raycroft made a save, but the rebound came out to Gionta. The winger then slid the puck under Raycroft's pads for his team-leading 16th goal of the season.

New Jersey outshot Boston 17-4 in the second stanza.

The Devils then tied the game up 5:27 into the third period. John Madden took a shot from the left circle and the rebound came out to Pandolfo, who was being mugged by a Bruins defenseman. Pandolfo tipped the rebound into the net with his skate and the play was reviewed, but it was determined that he did not use a kicking motion to deflect the puck in and the goal stood.

Game Notes

Gionta has scored in five straight games and has six goals during that run...Devils center had an assist and extended his point-scoring streak to eight games (5 goals, 8 assists)...Madden had two assists...Boston went 1- for-3 on the power play, while the Devils were 0-for-8 with the man advantage.
