NHL Game Summary - Anaheim at Phoenix

(Tuesday, November 22nd)

Final Score: Anaheim 2, Phoenix 1

Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Ilya Bryzgalov made 19 saves to lead the Mighty Ducks of Anaheim to a 2-1 victory over the Phoenix Coyotes at Glendale Arena.

Tyler Wright and Teemu Selanne scored for the Ducks, who snapped a franchise record-tying eight-game losing streak. They had gone 0-5-3 during the slide.

"I thought it was a work of art," said Ducks coach Randy Carlyle. "It was a beautiful game because we haven't had this feeling in a while and it feels good."

Geoff Sanderson scored the lone goal for the Coyotes, who had a two-game winning streak stopped. Curtis Joseph made 18 saves in the defeat.

The Ducks got on the scoreboard first on the night with a goal by Wright. His slapshot from the right point went through a screen and into the net for his first goal of the season, 4:37 into the opening period.

Anaheim took a 2-0 lead just 1:56 later. Ruslan Salei had the puck down low on the right side and got it to Selanne at the top of the right circle. He skated in and let fly with a wrist shot from the right faceoff spot and it beat Joseph over the shoulder for his team-leading 11th goal of the season.

The Coyotes got on the board thanks to a Ducks turnover. Shane Doan forced the turnover deep in the Ducks zone and got the centering pass to Sanderson in the slot. His wrist shot went into the left corner of the net as the buzzer was sounding. A review of the play determined the puck crossed the goalline with 0.2 seconds left.

Anaheim had eight shots during the second period, while Phoenix only managed three despite having two power plays.

Phoenix turned up the pressure in the third period to try to get the equalizer. Anaheim kept most of the shots to the outside of the slot area, but Phoenix got its best attempt toward the end of the period.

With the goaltender pulled, Zbynek Michalek got the puck in front of the net. He had a screen to work with. Several players were all over the front of the net, but his shot went high and time expired before another attempt could be made.

"You could see the confidence of the team was starting to go south," said Todd Marchant, who was just claimed by the Ducks off waivers from the Columbus Blue Jackets on Monday. "Tonight we played hard for 60 minutes and we came out with the big win."

After the buzzer sounded Doan sucker-punched Vitaly Vishnevski behind the net and started a scrum. Doan was slapped with 27 penalty minutes for the hit. Vishnevski left the ice with a cut on his left cheek.
