NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at San Jose

(Monday, January 16th)

Final Score: San Jose 3, Tampa Bay 1

San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Vesa Toskala made 21 saves and Joe Thornton picked up two assists as the San Jose Sharks defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 3-1, at HP Pavilion.

Milan Michalek, Kyle McLaren and Nils Ekman scored the goals for San Jose, which has won seven of its last eight games.

Brad Richards tallied the lone goal for Tampa Bay, which lost for the third time in its last four games.

Sean Burke allowed three goals on 25 shots as the Lightning kicked off a four- game road trip on a sour note.

"If it wasn't for Burke we'd be embarrassed," said Tampa Bay head coach John Tortorella. "Burke was outstanding. We should be embarrassed."

With 6:26 left in the first, San Jose drew first blood when Michalek fired a quick snap shot from the right circle that sailed past Burke's glove for the 1-0 lead.

Midway through the second stanza, the Sharks went up 2-0 with McLaren netting his second goal of the season. Thornton sent a centering pass to the defenseman in the slot and he blasted the puck past Burke.

The Lightning finally got a puck by Toskala midway through the final frame.

With 8:52 left to play, Tampa Bay made it 2-1 as Richards fluttered a shot on goal from the left point that found its way in the back of the net through a sea of players in front of Toskala.

"I think it was a really strong game defensively for us," said Toskala. "That one goal that went in, it was lucky, a bad bounce. Other than that, I was able to see the puck throughout the game."

The Sharks then put the game away. Thornton chipped the puck out into the neutral zone to Ekman, who skated in all alone on Burke and fired a wrister through the goaltender's five-hole that trickled over the goal line with 1:54 to go in the contest.

Tampa Bay pulled Burke with less than a minute to play, but could not generate any quality scoring chances.
