(Friday, January 13th)

Final Score: Washington 3, Anaheim 2 (OT)

Anaheim, CA (Sports Network) - Alexander Ovechkin netted his first career hat trick, scoring the game-winner in overtime, to lead the Washington Capitals to a 3-2 win over the Anaheim Mighty Ducks at the Pond.

Dainius Zubrus and Chris Clark each had two assists and Brent Johnson made 32 saves for the Capitals, who snapped a six-game losing streak.

Joffrey Lupul and Travis Moen each scored for the Ducks, who have dropped three of their last four games.

Jean-Sebastien Giguere made 23 saves in the defeat for Anaheim, which is now 8-1-2 in its last 11 games at the Pond.

Each team scored twice in the second period and the third period was a scoreless affair to force the issue into overtime.

Zubrus had the puck at mid-ice and attempted to bring it into the zone, but was checked off the puck. However, Ovechkin picked it up, brought it into the Anaheim end and snapped a shot at the left circle through an Anaheim player's legs that went through Giguere's five-hole with 3:04 elapsed in the extra session to give the Capitals the victory.

"I feel great we won this game," said Ovechkin. "We lost our last six so I feel excellent and I feel happy. We played hard."

The first period was a scoreless affair with Anaheim outshooting Washington 10-6 during the first 20 minutes.

The Capitals were the first to get on the scoreboard and they did it early in the second period. Clark had the puck in the neutral zone and right before hitting the Anaheim blue line he slid it to Ovechkin flying into the zone. The youngster cut into the slot and backhanded the disc over Giguere's right shoulder at the 1:45 mark.

However, the Ducks answered quickly when Lupul snapped a wrister from the left circle that bounced off the crossbar, hit the right post and went into the twine just 2:17 later to even it up.

Ovechkin gave Washington a 2-1 lead on a beautiful individual effort. He had the puck along the right boards, skated out to the middle and slid the puck between an Anaheim players legs. He picked it up on the backhand at the left circle and fired a turnaround shot that beat Giguere on the short side with 7:54 remaining in the second.

However, Anaheim knotted it up before the second intermission. Moen brought the puck into the Washington zone and let fly with a rocket from the right circle that went over Johnson's glove with 2:16 left.
