NHL Game Summary - Phoenix at Minnesota

(Tuesday, November 8th)

Final Score: Phoenix 4, Minnesota 2

Minneapolis, MN (Sports Network) - Curtis Joseph stopped 26 shots and Mike Comrie scored twice, as the Phoenix Coyotes defeated the Minnesota Wild, 4-2, at Xcel Energy Center.

Joseph picked up his 403rd career victory, tying Coyotes' goaltending coach and Hall-of-Famer Grant Fuhr for eighth place on the all-time wins list.

Keith Ballard and Mike Johnson each picked up two assists for the Coyotes, as they beat the Wild for a second time this season. Phoenix has won three of its last four games.

Daniel Tjarnqvist and Filip Kuba scored the two Minnesota goals. Randy Robitaille picked up his seventh assist of the season in the loss, as the Wild had their two-game win streak halted. Dwayne Roloson gave up three goals on 10 shots in the opening period before being lifted in favor of Manny Fernandez.

The Coyotes came out flying and scored three goals in the opening period to stun the Wild. They opened the scoring 1:05 into the game when Yanick Lehoux skated hard into the zone and beat Roloson with a snap shot from the right circle. Roloson got a piece, but the puck slid under his arm. Defensemen Derek Morris and Ballard assisted on Lehoux's first goal in the NHL coming on his first shift.

"Scoring my first goal on my first shift, I can't ask for more than that," said Lehoux.

At 11:54, Mike Leclerc would give the Coyotes a 2-0 advantage early. Geoff Sanderson fired a shot from a bad angle down low that Roloson kicked away, but Leclerc was right there in front to fire home the rebound for his eighth goal of the year.

Less than two minutes later, Comrie would re-direct a centering feed from Ladislav Nagy past Roloson, giving Phoenix a 3-0 lead at 13:31 of the opening stanza. The goal was Comrie's fifth of the season.

Tjarnqvist would get Minnesota on the board at 4:51 of the second period with a power play goal. He fired a shot from the point that deflected off Phoenix center Mike Ricci's stick and sailed high glove-side over Joseph.

Minnesota would make the score 3-2 on a fluke goal 3:50 into the third period. Down a man and on the penalty kill, defenseman Kuba fired the puck down the ice from his own blue line to clear the zone. As Joseph went to play the puck, it bounced off the ice and found its way past him. The goal was unassisted and Kuba's third of the year.

"Those goals are like an etch-a-sketch, you just have to shake those off," explained Joseph.

The Wild would gain momentum from that goal and apply heavy pressure on Phoenix, but Joseph would make several key saves down the stretch to keep the Coyotes in front.

Wild center Brian Rolston was stoned down low with seven minutes remaining in the third period. Joseph slid post-to-post in making the save, keeping Phoenix ahead.

"We battled hard and they let me see the puck," said Joseph. "We want to keep winning and we have some home games coming up that will help us."

With 2:35 remaining in the game, Comrie would score his second goal of the game.

Game Notes
