NHL Game Summary - New Jersey at NY Rangers |
(Saturday, November 5th)
Final Score: NY Rangers 3, New Jersey 2 (SO)
New York, NY (Sports Network) - Petr Prucha scored in a sudden death
shootout and added a goal in regulation, leading the New York Rangers to a 3-2
win over the New Jersey Devils at Madison Square Garden.
Blair Betts sent the game into overtime with a goal midway through the third
period and Kevin Weekes made 23 saves for the Rangers, who have won four of
their last five games.
The Rangers swept a home-and-home set with New Jersey and improved to 3-1
versus the Devils this season, including wins in the last three meetings.
"You're going to get types of games like this when you play back-to-back games
in your division," Devils head coach Larry Robinson said.
Brian Gionta scored a pair of goals to lead New Jersey, losers of three
straight. Scott Clemmensen was peppered with 37 shots and stopped 35.
After a scoreless opening period, New Jersey grabbed a 1-0 lead on Gionta's
first goal of the game, a power-play tally, just 1:40 into the second period.
Gionta then gave the Devils a 2-0 advantage midway through the second when New
York gave away the puck inside the New Jersey zone. Gionta hustled for the
loose puck at center ice, skated in on Weekes and wristed a shot just inside
the far post for his ninth goal of the season.
The Rangers, however, got on the board courtesy of Prucha's power-play marker
at the 16:28 mark of the second period. Jaromir Jagr was stationed along the
right boards and slipped a cross-ice pass in front to Prucha, who stuffed the
puck past Clemmensen's right leg pad.
"It's tough to win in this league," Clemmensen said. "I was disappointed again
that we didn't get the win."
Betts then pulled New York even with a goal at 10:08 of the third period. He
beat Clemmensen for his third goal of the season.
The rest of the third period was bland and overtime was needed. After a
scoreless extra period, Devils forward Alexander Mogilny was stopped on the
first try of the shootout. Martin Straka then missed for the Rangers, followed
by Viktor Kozlov's wrister into Weekes' pads.
Michael Nylander opened the scoring in the shootout on a backhand shot past
Clemmensen, but Gionta was hot and scored the same way on Weekes. Jagr then
hit the left post to force a sudden death shootout.
After Jamie Langenbrunner was stoned by Weekes, Prucha won the game with a
wrister between Clemmensen's pads.
"I tried to get the puck between his legs," Prucha said. "I didn't have a
plan, I just threw the puck on net and it went in. I'm excited."
