Dallas, TX (Sports Network) - Stu Barnes had his third career hat trick
and added an assist as the Dallas Stars defeated the Chicago Blackhawks 9-1 at
American Airlines Center.
Jason Arnott had two goals and an assist, Niko Kapanen had a goal and three
helpers and Bill Guerin added a goal and two assists for the Stars, who have
won two out of their last three games.
"We stuck it out and kept them off the board," said Arnott. "It was nice to
get off to a lead for a change and to play 60 minutes. We just want to get on
a winning streak, but we can't get to high on ourselves because we've got
Dallas goaltender Marty Turco had 18 saves to improve to 8-0-1 lifetime
Mikael Holmqvist scored the lone goal for the Blackhawks, who have lost five
out of their last six games.
Craig Anderson, who replaced Nikolai Khabibulin with 5:30 left in the first
period, made 17 saves for Chicago, which is winless (0-6-1) in its last seven
trips to Dallas.
Dallas got the first goal of the night 1:31 into the match. Kapanen took
a wrist shot from the right circle and the rebound came out front. Barnes
gathered the puck and shot it into the left corner past Khabibulin.
The Stars made it 4-0 later in the period with three goals separated by 4:12.
Guerin got his fourth goal of the season on a nice deflection off a
Philippe Boucher shot from the left point. Jere Lehtinen then let fly with a
wrist shot from the slot that beat Khabibulin on the glove side for a power
play goal and a 3-0 advantage. Just 1:16 later, a centering pass from behind
the net by Arnott found Brenden Morrow, who jammed the puck between
That was it for Khabibulin on the night, as he was pulled from net and
Anderson came in. Khabibulin had 14 saves.
Dallas kept up the pressure and scored another four goals in the second
Arnott scored on a wraparound from the right side of the net three minutes
into the period. Just 56 seconds later, with Dallas on a 2-on-1, Kapanen
passed it to Barnes, who paused before shooting, causing Anderson to fall
down, and shot the puck into the open net to give the Stars a 6-0 lead.
The Blackhawks finally got on the board 44 seconds after the Stars' sixth
goal. Holmqvist flicked a wrist shot from left circle that beat Turco over the
right shoulder for his second goal of the season.
Barnes completed the hat trick on a shorthanded breakaway. After the Chicago
point man fell down, Barnes took the puck in all alone and shot the puck
between Anderson's five-hole.
Arnott completed the scoring for the second period when he poked in a rebound
on a slap shot from the point, and the Stars went into the locker room with a
commanding 8-1 lead.
"We played a simple but effective game tonight," said Stars coach Dave
Tippett. "We needed to have a good game and a strong team effort, and we got
Kapanen got the last goal of the night with 2:52 left in the third period on a
one-timer from the right side of the net.
The Stars are 9-0-2 in their last 11 games against the Blackhawks...Before
this game the Stars had a minus-10 goal differential in the first
period...Barnes' hat trick was his first since January 10, 1998, when he
accomplished the feat against New Jersey...Dallas is 4-3-0 when scoring first
on the season...The Dallas power play was 3-for-12 on the night...Chicago went
0-for-5 with the man advantage.
