NHL Game Summary - Tampa Bay at Ottawa

(Thursday, November 3rd)

Final Score: Ottawa 4, Tampa Bay 2

Ottawa, ON (Sports Network) - Wade Redden scored the go-ahead goal 6:32 into the third period, as the Ottawa Senators defeated the Tampa Bay Lightning, 4-2, at the Corel Centre.

Daniel Alfredsson and Redden each tallied a goal and an assist for the Senators. Martin Havlat and Mike Fisher added goals and Dominik Hasek stopped 31 shots for Ottawa, which won for the fourth time in its last five games.

Brad Richards and Vincent Lacavalier notched goals and John Grahame made 27 saves for the Lightning, who lost for the second consecutive game after winning three straight.

Havlat and Alfredsson's performance came one night after both recorded the first four-goal game of their careers in a 10-4 road win over the Buffalo Sabres.

"I always feel that if we get close, we certainly have a better than average chance to win," Ottawa head coach Bryan Murray said. "It bothered me that we kept getting the penalties we did. We came in short but we got one off and then another one right away. In a couple of cases we put the puck in a position where we had to defend with illegal tactics."

Down 2-1, the Lightning netted the equalizer while on the power play early in the third period after Lacavalier swept the puck past Hasek's stick side at the 4:12 mark. Vaclav Prospal dug the puck out of the right corner and took a shot on Hasek. Hasek made the save but the rebound kicked right out to Lacavalier in the slot for the tying goal.

Ottawa regained the lead after Redden blasted a slap shot from the left point that made its way through traffic and past Grahame.

The Senators extended their lead over two minutes later after Fisher stole a clearing attempt by Grahame, skated into the slot and unleashed a wrist shot that beat Grahame stick-side high at the 8:48 mark.

"We battled back the whole game," Grahame said. "To give up a goal like that after a screwed up play on my part, it must of taken the life out of the team. When I'm making plays like that it's not going to help. They went up 3-2 on a nice play. It's 100% my fault and it is tough to live with."

Havlat got Ottawa on the scoreboard midway through the first period after he beat Grahame with a wrist shot top shelf from the right circle for a 1-0 lead. Havlat got the puck in the circle and both Grahame and a Tampa defender went low to guard against a quick release, giving Havlat plenty of time to put the puck up high.

Alfredsson extended Ottawa's lead to 2-0 at 7:44 of the second period after he gathered a rebound, kicked the puck to his forehand on the doorstep and beat Grahame glove side.

With his assist on Alfredsson's goal, Dany Heatley extended his team record by posting a point in his 12th straight game to start the season. He has tallied 10 goals and 12 assists during the span.

Tampa Bay cut Ottawa's lead in half just under three minutes later after Richards one-timed a shot past Hasek from the slot. Richards worked a give- and-go with Martin St. Louis to perfection after St.Louis passed the puck back to Richards from the right circle for the power-play goal.
