(Wednesday, November 2nd)
Final Score: San Jose 3, Nashville 2 (OT)
San Jose, CA (Sports Network) - Alyn McCauley's shorthanded goal, 1:44 into
overtime, lifted the San Jose Sharks to a 3-2 victory over the Nashville
Predators at HP Pavilion.
Marcel Goc and Patrick Marleau also netted goals for the Sharks, who have won
four games in a row. Brad Stuart assisted on the game-winning tally, while
Nolan Schaefer made 21 saves in the win.
Martin Erat and Paul Kariya scored for the Predators, who are now winless in
their last four games after starting the season 8-0-0. Kariya also had an
assist and Chris Mason stopped 33-of-36 shots.
"We can't turn the puck over on a draw like that," said Mason. "San Jose's
guys skate like the wind. There wasn't any chance of our guys getting back and
then the guy made a unbelievable pass and game over."
After San Jose's Rob Davison took a high stick penalty 1:12 in the extra
frame, McCauley took control of the puck up left boards before hitting Stuart
with a cross ice pass. Stuart then backhanded a pass back to McCauley in the
slot, who tipped the return feed over Mason's right shoulder for the win.
"(David) Legwand was kind of falling and I lifted his stick, immediately saw
Stuart, and slid him the puck," said McCauley of the game-winning play. "It
was a great backhand pass."
San Jose found itself down 2-1 heading into the third frame before Marleau
tied the game.
With 8:30 left in the third, San Jose found itself on the power play after
Danny Markov was whistled for a high stick penalty. The Sharks then
capitalized to send the game into overtime when Marleau took a pass from Marco
Sturm in the high slot before flipping a shot that beat Mason high glove side
at the 12:33 mark.
"We had a number of chances, the puck didn't go in," said Sharks head coach
Ron Wilson. "Mason paid extremely well in kind of a relief role. We're
getting that to from Schaefer. You can never underestimate the other's team
Erat had put Nashville up 1-0 just 1:35 into the opening period after his shot
from the right circle beat Schaefer stick side.
Goc's goal tied the contest at the 6:14 mark, but Kariya would put Nashville
back up seven seconds later.
Kariya stole the puck deep in the offensive zone off of Schaefer, who skated
out to the bottom of the right circle to play the puck, and controlled it
behind the net. He then flipped the disc towards the front slot and the puck
deflected off of Sharks defenseman Niko Dimitrakos' leg and into the net
before Schaefer could get back into the goal crease.
Neither team could find the back of the net in the second period as both
goaltenders played well. Schaefer made nine saves in the frame, while Mason
stopped all 15 shots he saw.

Jose is now 2-4-0 when its opponent scores first...Marleau extended his point
