Glendale, AZ (Sports Network) - Bryan Berard notched his first career hat
trick and Rick Nash added a goal and an assist, as the Columbus Blue Jackets
defeated the Phoenix Coyotes, 5-2, at Glendale Arena.
Rostislav Klesla added his third goal of the season and Marc Denis made 32
saves for Columbus, which snapped a three-game skid. Sergei Fedorov added
four assists for the Blue Jackets.
"I think that it is a good start to the second half," Berard said. "I have
only been back a few games now, but you can see that this team is really
turning it around."
Ladislav Nagy tallied a goal and an assist and Curtis Joseph stopped just 10
of the 15 shots he faced for Phoenix, which has lost three straight contests.
Shane Doan added a goal for the Coyotes.
"You can't lose games to St. Louis and Columbus," Nagy said. "We have to have
those points because we are fighting for a playoff spot. We didn't play how we
are supposed to play. I don't know what to say."
Columbus got on the scoreboard 6:16 into the first period after Klesla's shot
from the left point deflected off of a Coyote defenseman in the left circle
before flying past Joseph for a 1-0 lead.
Phoenix tied the game just over four minutes later after Nagy's wrister from
the right circle beat Denis glove side.
The Blue Jackets regained the lead 36 seconds later after Nash split two
defenders and beat Joseph with a backhander from the slot for a 2-1 advantage.
Columbus extended its lead to 3-1 while on the power play with 4:03 left in
the opening frame after Berard beat Joseph glove side with a slap shot from
the high slot.
The Coyotes got back within one 1:39 into the second period while on the man
advantage as Doan deflected a shot from the right point into the top shelf to
make it 3-2.
The Blue Jackets, though, upped their lead to 4-2 less than two minutes later
while on the power play after Berard's shot from the right point found its way
Berard then capped the hat trick with 45 seconds left in the game with
a one-timer from the top of the left circle on the power play that beat Joseph
for the final margin.
It was the first win in Columbus's franchise history in Phoenix...Fedorov's
four assists gave him 600 for his career...Nash's goal was his sixth in five
games...Columbus, which was last in the NHL on the power play at 11.9 percent,
went 3-for-4 on the man advantage...Phoenix, which outshot Columbus 34-15, was
1-for-9 on the man advantage.
