NHL Game Summary - NY Islanders at Carolina |
(Friday, January 6th)
Final Score: Carolina 4, NY Islanders 1
Raleigh, NC (Sports Network) - Cory Stillman and Rod Brind'Amour netted goals
on the same power play that bridged two periods while Cam Ward made 28 saves
to lead Carolina to a 4-1 victory over the New York Islanders at the RBC
Kevyn Adams and Justin Williams each added a goal and an assist for the
Hurricanes, who recorded their third straight win and are 8-0-1 in their last
nine home games.
Wade Dubielewicz, making his second NHL start, stopped 31 of 34 shots for the
Islanders. He was forced into action due to knee injuries to Rick DiPietro and
Eric Godard had the lone goal for New York, which was dealt its sixth setback
in seven outings.
Adams gave Carolina a 1-0 lead at 13:58 of the first period with a nifty
redirection of Oleg Tverdosky's one-timer. The goal came one second after the
conclusion of a Hurricanes power play.
Dubielewicz was solid over the rest of the opening session, and the Islanders
drew even early in the second when Godard crashed the net and knocked home a
rebound of a wrister by Arron Asham at the 5:37 mark.
New York had chances to move in front, but failed on two second-period power
plays following Godard's tally. The Islanders then put themselves in a hole
with two costly penalties towards the end of the frame.
Carolina cashed in on the 5-of-3 situation. Dubielewicz made the initial stop
on Stillman's shot from in close, but Ray Whitney corralled the carom and
skated behind the net before finding Stillman open on the right side for a 2-1
advantage with just 24 seconds left before the intermission.
The goal lengthened Stillman's point streak to a career-best 10 games.
A one-man advantage carried into the third period, and the Hurricanes struck
again with just 1:08 elapsed. Frantisek Kaberle's shot from the right point
was blocked by New York defenseman Tomi Pettinen, but Whitney got the puck and
quickly slid it to Brind'Amour for an easy score.
